In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air,
But only His mother
In her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

April Braswell

thank my dear San Francisco friends for singing the full hymn. This will always be the Christmas time of his death and remembrance I associate with my darling late husband my beloved Jim. Since Christmas 2001 I always love THIS hymn. TY|
1. In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
 earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
 snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
 in the bleak midwinter, long ago.
2. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
 heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
 In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
 the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
3. Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
 cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
 but his mother only, in her maiden bliss,
 worshiped the beloved with a kiss.
4. What can I give him, poor as I am?
 If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
 if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
 yet what I can I give him:  give my heart.

Gustav Holst wrote five verses; I can't find anyone singing them all; it seems that every arrangement I find cuts at least one out; this one cut out the 3rd verse:

Enough for Him*, whom Cherubim
Worship night and day,
A Breast full* of milk
And a manger full of hay;
Enough for Him*, whom Angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

In the bleak midwinter
BY CHRISTINA ROSSETTI
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

On a better note, what an exquisite recording. Chanticleer is a group of extraordinarily talented singers with top notch repertoire. I'm glad the use of countertenors has become more widespread than before. Chanticleer and the King's Singers used to be very much alone in terms of professional ensembles that did this kind of stuff. I'm glad to see that other ensembles are following suit and noticing the beauty of the "countertenor sound."

God is my saviour. This song is beautifully sung. Merry Christmas.

Choral music doesn't get a whole lot better than this. A timeless song done in the very best style.

The vocal harmony can't get any better, I've heard them live many times, it just makes you want to close your eyes and listen, stunning.

This is SO beautiful.. These guys are unbelievably good.. Such fantastic music - and yet totally acappella. I hear instruments which isn't there.

I first heard this rendition back in 2002, and it is still one of my favorite choral arrangements ever made. I have yet to hear a recording or performance of it that matches this.

Always loved male a Capella choruses and this is one of the sweetest versions of this songs I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. Well done!
