The first is San Francisco-based ensemble known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its twelve male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. Called “the world's reigning male chorus,” by The New Yorker, and named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, Chanticleer will perform more than 100 concerts in 2013-14, the Grammy Award-winning ensemble’s 36th Season. Praised by The San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer will tour to 21 of the United States and 12 foreign countries this season, including appearances at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, New York's St. Ignatius Loyola, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Vienna's Musikverein, and Prague's Rudolfinum In 2009, Chanticleer made debut appearances in Ireland and the People's Republic of China and will return to the latter in June for Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

The second is Salt Lake City indie folk artist Andrew Shaw, who also heads a band, The Adonis.

I remember listening to this on a rock station in the late 1960's. I'm not sure why they chose it but it was a great late night listen.

The original text is "Dios guardó el lobo de nuestra cordera" and that's how people understood it in the 16th century. Check the original Cancionero de Uppsala facsimile. "Guardar" may also mean "invigilate", "put away by hiding". "God put away the wolf from our lamb"

Quizás es la polifonia, o la calidad de la grabación, o la rapidez con la que lo pronuncian. Claro, un ingleshablante no cantará el español como un españolhablante. :)

@PapagenoHannover We wouldn't change a Brahms harmony? I totally would... Seriously though, I've heard many recordings of this song where the harmony is altered. And I've heard some where the harmony is unaltered. I like it altered personally. I don't think there's anything wrong with altering it if people are made to understand that it's been altered and that it's not quite "authentic".

Wow. So weird. I came looking for this because Vodafone in Iceland made a tv commercial with the children of my hometown where they sang this song with icelandic lyrics and played iphones and ipads as instruments :D So now, it's kind of strange to listen to it in the original language...

The voices are beautiful, the intonation really good. So please don´t romanticize the harmony in bar 4 of the refrain. It is not O.K. to put our romantic understanding of harmony like a parfume over a music which had a different attitude to harmony. The scale is from d to d without alterated notes. The c sharp in bar 4 - alto part - is wrong. We never would change a Reger or Brahms harmony. Why do we feel free to do this with early music without analizing the context?

I mean, as someone who is conducted by Frank Albinder, a former member of Chanticleer: Yes, he, at the very least, would change Brahms if he felt it would work better. Your comparison is not valid, in that it assumed the nature of the group’s artistry. Composers write the scores, musicians perform them. It is inherent in performance that it will not perfectly match a score. That not matching it intentionally implies disrespect rather than artistry implies more about your sensibilities than theirs.

They can change it if it makes sense for them to do so. Not to mention every group has a unique way of singing, no two are alike. Composers meant for their music to be interpreted in different ways. And what you might not like, someone else may love, and vice versa.

@baribassviolin That’s a rather silly statement. While it HAS become associated with various pagan festivals and celebrations, over the years, the origin of Christmas (Christ mass) is exactly as we have all understood it to be.

This is not for Christmas at all... People confused the real meaning of "villancico". The word comes from "Villa" which means town. This music was used to "party"

The Lyrics of the third verse are wrong. The original lyrics are: "Dios guardó DEL lobo A nuestra cordera". Which means: The Lord protected OUR (she)lamb FROM the wolf" or "As God kept our lamb from the wolf" The lamb is a Virgin Mary's reference, while the wolf means the original sin. So the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. Maybe someone recorded the song changing the prepositions "DEL" and "LA" giving the song a totally opposed meaning.

@DrunkCanadian3 the lyrics are a metaphor for the Immaculate conception. The lamb here is Mary, the wolf the Devil. it is Joyful to know the lord has protected Mary so he could be born to die for us, you should rejoice and party!

Hi, I do not understand, why you are changig the harmony in bar 4 of the Tutti to A Mayor. I think the score is right. The music is written in the doric tonality, in which the fifth grade usualli is harmonized as a minor accord. I also would suggets a faster tempo. Otherwise the wolfe will have the possibility to bite and eat every one of the singers.

hcjuancamilo is right - this is not christmas song. villancico is type of civic or folk music - something like carol, but performed on every fests, fairs etc... just for joy and dancing
