Chappell shared the following about the song's inspiration in press release statements:
“I wrote this song so I could live out my cheerleader fantasy! I just wanted to make something simple and silly that I could do with the audience because I’m a huge fan of audience participation. Also, selfishly (and shamelessly) wanted to bounce around on stage singing a song about being hot.“ — via coup de main
“I wanted a cheerleading song, I wanted something that I could do with the audience. Like, I was really jealous of the “Y.M.C.A.”. So, I made, “H-O-T-T-O-G-O”, a little dance that I can do with the audience. And fun fact, it’s actually a real cheer. But I made up my own cheer with that. But it’s fun, come to a show and I’ll teach you the dance.“ – via NME

Five, six, seven, eight
I could be the one, or your new addiction
It's all in my head but I want non-fiction
I don't want the world, but I'll take this city
Who can blame a girl? Call me hot, not pretty
Baby, do you like this beat?
I made it so you'd dance with me
It's like a hundred ninety-nine degrees
When you're doing it with me, doing it with me
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
Snap and clap and touch your toes
Raise your hands, now body roll
Dance it out, you're hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
Snap and clap and touch your toes
Raise your hands, now body roll
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go
Well, I woke up alone staring at my ceiling
I try not to care but it hurts my feelings
You don't have to stare, come here, get with it
No one's touched me there in a damn hot minute
And baby, don't you like this beat?
I made it so you'd sleep with meIt's like a hundred ninety-nine degrees
When you're doing it with me, doing it with me
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
Snap and clap and touch your toes
Raise your hands, now body roll
Dance it out, you're hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
Snap and clap and touch your toes
Raise your hands, now body roll
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go
What's it take to get your number?
What's it take to bring you home?
Hurry up, it's time for supper
Order up, I'm hot to go
What's it take to get your number?
Hurry up, it's getting cold
Hurry up, it's time for supper
Order up, I'm hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go (oh, yeah)
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go (hot to go)
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go (oh, yeah)
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
You can take me hot to go
Whew, it's hot in here
Is anyone else hot?
Woo, you coming home with me?
Okay, it's hot
I'll call the cab

It’s so amazing how many people, from across five whole different generations, are bonding over her music!
I’m 30, but I’ve adored Cyndi Lauper from the moment I heard “True Colors” in the back seat of my mom’s car, on the radio station it was dialled to. I’ll always remember asking her who it was that had such a “funny” voice (I was around 8 or 9 so I didn’t really know how to express how cool I thought it was).
I went on to notice and point it out whenever I’d hear that voice in “She-Bop,” “Time After Time” and of course “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” every time they were played. As I hit my painfully shy and depressed teenage years and stuff at home started getting tough at the same time, “True Colors” and “Time After Time” cemented themselves in my brain as untouchably bittersweet, brilliant pieces of art.
Still believe she’s one of the most vocally unique and gifted artists of her era. Plus an all around lovely person. It makes me so happy to know she’s still in love with music and playing shows.
Alright, off to listen to this Chappell album all over again lol. 🖤✌🏻
