Chara earned her nickname as a schoolchild from her teacher (charachara means "scatterbrained") and has been called such ever since. She has always been musically involved, she began composing music in her later years of elementary school and played keyboard in a band from her second year of high school.
One of the things that defines Chara's music is her singing voice. It is often described as sweet and whispering like a child's, yet forceful and sincere. Despite her very distinctive singing voice, Chara considers herself a musician first and foremost; proficient with instruments such as the piano, drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, synthesizer and tambourine. There are common themes to a lot of her music, including motherhood, innocence, love, beauty, and cheerfulness.
She has appeared as one of the main characters in 'Swallowtail Butterfly' movie and sang all the songs. The album 'Montage' is actually a vocal collection from this movie, that's why it was released under the name of Yen Town Band - which is a fictional band from the story. She has also starred in 'PiCNiC' where she played the mental patient Coco. She would go on to marry her co-star Asano Tadanobu (浅野忠信) in 1995. Currently, the pair have two children, a daughter Sumire (born 1995) and later a son Himi (born 1999).

The lyrics of Chara's song "mILK" discuss issues of loneliness, self-doubt, and self-acceptance. The song begins with Chara acknowledging that everyone in the world is a good person, but she feels like a cat because when she cries, the only thing that can comfort her is milk. Chara then describes feeling alone and rolling over in bed, but recognizing that she alone is responsible for her own actions and the path she is taking. She deliberately chooses not to say anything about it.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "hold me quietly in a world without a mirror," which suggests that Chara is seeking comfort and security in a world where she cannot see her own reflection. She then sings about how others have told her that living a peaceful life is the same as living in loneliness and sadness. She apologizes for her lack of motivation and her tendency to give up in the face of difficulty, but asks that those around her not hate her or try to stop her. Chara then repeats the chorus, singing about how she feels fragile and cannot love others, but still seeks comfort in a world without mirrors.
Taken as a whole, "mILK" is a poignant meditation on what it means to feel alone and lost, and the ways in which people seek comfort and companionship in a world that can be difficult to navigate. The repeated refrain of "hold me quietly" is especially powerful, evoking a sense of vulnerability and a need for emotional support that so many people experience at some point in their lives.
