Reeves Eason's nickname "Breezy" was certainly not earned by his work on the BEN-HUR set, for his merciless pace cost the lives of over a hundred horses. As Bushman said sadly, "If it limped, they shot it." A stunt man was killed in a chariot crash, and Navarro himself only narrowly escaped death. The madness ended for a while. " That was the 1925 silent version of Ben Hur. Not the Wyler version

No matter how many times I watch this movie, and this scene, I always get this shiver of delight and relief at 2:50 watching Judah finally getting control of the whip and beating Messala… and then again at 2:54 when it’s game over for Messala! The '50s were a time of cinema where film studios made massive, epic movies set in ancient times. With widescreen being introduced at the beginning of the decade, the size and scope of a film doubled and scenes didn't have to be just in a studio set anymore. With full size sets built on location, authentic ancient costumes, and bright colors thanks to Technicolor cameras, movies like "The Robe, "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur" became some of the most successful films of that decade.

The remake doesn't touch this. This was a very expensive production filmed far, far from Hollywood--I think it was Rome--with the lead actors actually driving chariots (although some stunt men helped with the most dangerous shots). It's just silly to remake this movie, because it still works NOW. This ain't CGI, folks. This is an action sequence for all time.

Year 1959. I had gone to see this film called “BEN HUR” at the Metro cinema in Bombay. I must be of 10years of age. This scene cannot be replicated for thousands of years to come. Notice there's no musical soundtrack, just the sounds of hooves, chariots, whipping of horses, wheels falling off, crowd cheering. Makes it all the more impactful and adds to the intensity. Excellent decision by the director(?), an Oscar well deserved. As for the set design of the Arena - just awesome.

An amazing masterpiece. Head-to-head fight of horses,
horsesshoes sounds, death scene. Pure acting. The horses added a special splendor to the scene. It's a movie made in 1959, but 4 hours is worth every frame of this movie, rather than spending 10 minutes on vampire movies with sharks swimming in the sand made today. What a movie you made, Charlton! Even after 50 years it is watched with pleasure.

This took 5 weeks to film and amazingly no horse or stunt man was seriously injured. Heston, who had learned to drive a chariot for the Ten Commandments did almost all of his own driving except for the jump over the disabled chariot. That was done by the son of the movie's stunt coordinator, the famous stuntman Yakima Canutt. He actually did the stunt wrong and almost got killed, Canutt actually though he had died, but he survived unharmed. The scene was so spectacular it was kept in the finished film.

This was a time when Holliwood was facing a crisis. Theaters were bringing less and less revenue; and thus only epic high budget movies were expected to bring profit. But if they failed, they failed hard.

I can believe the movie was released in 1959 because I first saw the movie at a palace of a theater in Washington, DC, in 1960. The theater had a HUGE screen and a multi-channel sound system. I saw several pictures that were given grand presentations like that--among them WEST SIDE STORY and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, both early 1960s pictures.

I watched this on a huge screen in a theater a year after it was released. The theater had 2 levels and had at least 6 mezzanines, and every seat was occupied. It was glorious. It was due to this childhood experience that I took a minor in classics in college where I learned that this scene was correct in every respect except one: they were using war chariots which are very different from racing chariots which were extremely lightweight such that one of the common dangers in the race was the chariot catching fire due to friction in the wheel axel joints.

No green screens, no special effects. These are original and pure stunts done by stunt men and the actors with these horses. Also, the entire set it real. Unbelievable! There is not a studio or a production team that could make a movie like this today as they would not have the funds nor the and high caliber and high level actors to produce such a film. Nothing can touch this version of Ben-Hur.

It also an allegory. The roman thoroughness is the whip. Powerful black horses indeed, but by the whip. While Ben Hur and the Sheik used something else to empower the white horses; training, determination, love and care. Perhaps if the Roman Empire could have dropped the whip they would have lasted for longer.

I just love Ben-Hur of 1959, one of my favorite films of all time...awesome story throughout the whole movie...great actors/actresses....love the chariot race and the horses....I never tire from watching it..and do so whenever I can, plus it always feels the same to me even after watching it several times over again. God bless those who made it an enduring classic and all those who made it such a great, successful film.....HIGH 5 always.

That stuntman was Joe Canutt, son of famed stuntman/director Yakima Canutt (who directed the stunts in the race). It's true that his flying out of the chariot wasn't planed, but Joe only got a bad cut on his chin from it. As of this writing (2016) Joe is still alive and kicking. Also, according to Wikipedia no horses were harmed nor were any stuntmen seriously injured during filming.

This was my all time favorite movie as a child! The way it was directed and produced, the cast, the extras in this movie made it come alive! The horses used in this movie were rented from a farmer who owned 4 white horses. The other horses were were rented as well. The 4 whites, lived into the 1970, and eventually they all died. They were also rented out for other films made in Italy. But the scene of the chariot race in this version of Ben Hur, one of the best ever made! No wonder the film won 12 Oscars! I believe the 2nd movie to win as many was Titanic in 1997. Everyone (main characters) are all deceased now, except the lady who played Esther. I believe I read where she is in her mid 80's and still has a great memory!

I still dont understand how they pictured this marvelous part of the movie. I dint think this can be taken more artistically than this. Legendary film making with the technology available in 1950 s. I would have watched this movie more than 500 times and I still am watching. I was a child when my grandpa took me to watch this movie but the theater was over whirlingly crowded. We need to wait for a month to get entry and watch this movie .

Matthew Goodman cuz they used real horses in the movie, chariot races were dangerous and have killed many players because of the lack of rules and the fact that you can't always stop horses quickly. Plus, they aren't wearing much protection either.

I watched an interview with Charlton Heston last night. The part at 0:45 where his team jumps the wrecked chariot wasn't staged quite that way; the stuntman actually did pop out of the chariot, and managed to get back in. As Heston and others watched the dailies, it was determined to keep that bit of action in the movie, and they added Heston climbing back in to make it work. =^[.]^=

I showed this movie to my girlfriend for the first time does she have a saw it. she is was in awe by this master piece and the chariot race. The cinematography of this movie was way ahead of it’s time. Nothing in todays movies can even come close to the acting and the action scene. Let me not leave out the musical score that embeds this movie. Truly a gem to have in your dvd collection!

i have never watched this movie like completely, but my father talks abt it whenever he got the chance to do it. This scene is one of his favorites from the movie. It's brilliantly well-done and has great cinematography. However, doing this scene must have been extremely dangerous, I know a lot horses died and one stuntman nearly died while shooting this scene. I'm a big fan of practical effects when they don't offer any risk for the actors or any kind of being who is part of the scene. But it's a true masterpiece.

Of course, there's music just before the race (Parade of the Charioteers) and just after the race, but not DURING the race. Moviemakers were pretty savvy about movie music back then. Another 1959 movie, Alfred Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST, has music at the train station immediately preceding the prairie scene, which plays without music UNTIL the aerial crash into the oil tanker, when the tension explodes in a variation of Bernard Herrmann's fandango. NO music during action sequences like the chariot race and the cropduster attack, but great music on the borders of these action sequences.

Years ago I bought a roman tribunes outfit in a Hollywood outlet in Yonkers NY and wore it while bike riding on the Bronx river parkway to white plains what a sight people got out of my way and lined the way cheering and applauding I never imagined what an affect it would bring especially with the red feathers of a tribune blowing in the summer wind

The original classic 1959 version of “Ben Hur” is the only version anybody ever needs to watch! The iconic chariot race sequences look amazing in high definition and 4K though.
