Cleansed
Charity Gayle Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where I wait, resurrection, and the touch of Your breath
I die now daily, because I've learned to live
In the grace that belongs to, all who are born again
I am cleansed
I am washed
I am sanctified
I am right with my God for all time
Cause Jesus my Savior's alive
Here, at the table, where children are fed
We are filled with the mercy of the Lamb and the Bread
I feast now daily because I've learned to live
In the grace that belongs to all who are born again
I am cleansed
I am washed
I am sanctified
I am Holy Ghost filled and water baptized
I am right with my God for all time
Cause Jesus my Savior's alive
Glory, glory
This is what is called glory
Glory, glory
This is what is called glory
Glory, glory
This is what is called glory
Glory, glory
This is what is called glory
Glory, glory
This is what is called glory
Glory, glory
This is what is called glory
I am cleansed
I am washed
I am sanctified
I am Holy Ghost filled and water baptized
I am right with my God for all time
Cause Jesus my Savior
Jesus my Savior
Jesus my Savior
He's alive
The lyrics of this song by Charity Gayle, "Cleansed," are full of religious symbolism and references to Christian beliefs. The first stanza talks about the altar, which is a place of sacrifice and offering, typically found in churches. The singer runs to it for rest and waits for a spiritual experience, such as resurrection or getting touched by the breath of God. The second and third lines of the first stanza further explain that the singer dies daily and has learned to live in the grace that belongs to those who have been born again. This is a reference to John 3:3 in the Bible, where Jesus tells Nicodemus "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
The second stanza talks about the table where the children are fed, which is a metaphor for the communion table found in churches. The mercy of the Lamb and the Bread refer to Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and the bread and wine that represent that sacrifice during communion. The rest of the lyrics repeat the chorus, which celebrates the singer's status as cleansed, washed, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost, along with being water baptized and right with God for all time because of Jesus' resurrection.
Overall, the lyrics of "Cleansed" are about the joy and gratefulness that come with being a Christian and having a relationship with Jesus Christ. They reference various aspects of Christian worship and theology, such as the grace and mercy of God, baptism, and communion.

I play this song in my classroom and anoint my classroom door regularly. The don't realize they are walking into the anointing when these 8th graders sit down. I have students that act up in every class but mine. Teachers ask how I control them and I have the opportunity to explain it isn't me...its the God of the universe!
