As a Lebanese, it warms my heart to hear that Basho was an admirer of our national treasures the singer Fayrouz, her husband composer Assi Rahbani and poet Khalil Gebran. It's really sad that just a few months after this interview the Lebanon he praises so much in this interview as a place of religious coexistence was ruined by a brutal and bloody civil war.

His description of the Druze people as "the Sufis of Lebanon" is kinda wrong however. The Druzes are a religious group that mix Ismaili Shia Muslim beliefs with gnosticism, Sufism, neo-Platonism and even Buddhism (they believe in reincarnation). Interestingly, most Druze believes are still kept secret and have yet to be made available to the general non-Druze public.

@J E John Fahey thought he was weird. But liked parts of his music a LOT. You can read an interview online where John talks about how much he likes parts of the Song of the Stallion. He said almost no one understand what he was doing. And if John Fahey said this it means a lot.

@J E And from all i know about Basho it was very tough to be around him. I dont think many of us would have enjoyed his company. But this lost soul has created some of the best music i've ever heard.

24:50 in Kahlil Gibran's story "A Ship in the Mist", the narrator has a dream in which his soul lover and companion is crucified on a flowering apple tree. Robbie's friend recalled in the documentary Voice of the Eagle that when he was in Robbie's dorm room, he saw his painting of a mystical crucified woman. I'm inclined to think that this story was where Robbie Basho sourced his inspiration from.

Basho was great. And I don't want to be a wet blanket. But I have to objectively say that any reasonably skilled, intermediate guitarist can tune to an open chord and wheel away on something they may call a "raga". Ragas are pretty precise and formal pieces - it takes a lifetime of study and practice to learn the tal system alone, for example, let alone subtleties like note production and ornamentation. I'm listening to Basho's "ragas" and i have to say that they are mildly inspired Western approximations of the music. Again, I love Basho's music, but I think his ragas are almost complete jive.

@Mat Okay, Mat - no offense, but I'm going to take a wild guess here: you're not a guitar player. Because, if you were a guitar player, you would know that if you tune your guitar to an open chord and then use one string (usually the skinny E) to improvise exotic sounding melodies (usually in some mode of the harmonic minor scale) and tell non-musicians that it is an ancient raga you learned, you will fool 90% of them.

I'm not offended by your bad guess or your simple view of what good guitar playing sounds like. I just wish you wouldn't think it is useful to call his music 'almost complete jive' or assume he was 'fooling 90% of them' just to sound like a more accomplished or genuine musician. You are being what is called a hater.

@Mat For the record, I love a lot of Basho's work. And I'm from the school that values critique. I don't consider it a personal affront that you don't agree with me. I just wish you'd have something meaningful to offer by way of a counter argument. My friends and i do this all the time. Dialectic. I definitely don't mean to personally offend or insult anyone. :)

Can't really find any writing on his Japanese influences, I know he obviously liked Japanese poetry, but does anyone know what Japanese music influences he had?
