Some of his best known songs include "Boum...!", "Y'A D'La Joie", "Que Reste-T-Il De Nos Amours?", "Ménilmontant", and "Douce France". His catalog of songs is enormous, numbering close to a thousand. While many of his songs mined relatively conventional topics such as love, Paris, and nostalgia for his younger days, what set Trenet's songs apart were their personal, poetic, sometimes quite eccentric qualities, often infused with a warm wit. Some of his songs had unconventional subject matter, with whimsical imagery bordering on the surreal. "Y'A D'La Joie" evokes "joy" through a series of disconnected (though all vaguely phallic) images, including that of a subway car shooting out of its tunnel into the air, the Eiffel Tower crossing the street and a baker making excellent bread. The lovers engaged in a minuet in "La Polka Du Roi" reveal themselves at length to be "no longer human": they are made of wax and trapped in the Musée Grévin. Many of his hits from the 1930s and 1940s effectively combine the melodic and verbal nuance of French song with American swing rhythms.
Other artists have had hits with some of Trenet's songs, such as the American Bobby Darin's success with "Beyond the Sea" ("La Mer"). Darin's version preserved the charming chording of Trenet's original which the author dashed off in about an hour in 1946 as an homage to the French coastline, once again free of battleships and the scars of World War II.
Other Trenet songs were recorded by such popular French singers as Maurice Chevalier, Jean Sablon, and Frehel.

Qui pouvait avoir vingt ans
Je vivais, on le devine
Haletant
Ah ! le temps, le printemps, inquiétant, excitant
On se couchait sur la plage
C'était pas encore l'été
On avait l'air d'être sage
Quel état que l'été met en moi, quel émoi
Et quel mois de mai !
Pigeon vole
Le ciel vole
Chapeau vole
Et vole aussi mon cœur
Plein de bonheur
Cheveu vole
Herbe vole
Dindon vole
Et vole mon regard
Vers tes yeux noirs
Ah ! quel vent du nord
Qu'il fait bon dehors
Qu'il fait bon et doux
Près de vous
Rentrons vite
Ma Nini, ma Nounou, mon amie, ma chérie
Mon rien et mon tout
Pigeon vole
Le lit vole
Chemise vole
Tout tourne et vole autour
De notre amour
Baisers volent
Jambes volent
Les mains volent
Volent de beaux trésors
Trésors en or
Ah ! quelle émotion !
Ah ! quelle passion !
Ah ! quelle vigueur !
Quelle douceur
Il faut vite
Ma petite
Prévenir Monsieur le Curé
Avant qu'il ne soit envolé
Mais hélas les beaux ménages
Se fâchent toujours, c'est curieux
Tout à l'heure, sur la plage
Un monsieur
Un peu vieux
L'air vicieux, t'a dit :
« Viens », tiens, tiens, tiens
Pour cette raison suprême
Sans émoi, je suis parti
Alors tu m'as dit « Je t'aime »
J'ai répondu « C'est fini »
Je m'en vais loin d'ici, loin de toi, sans souci
Sous un autre toit
Pigeon vole
Larmes volent
Chagrin vole
Je vais te mettre au pli
Tu me supplies
Tu murmures
Tu me jures
Imposture
Le petit vieux d'la mer
C'est ton grand père
Je suis bon et doux
Je pardonne tout
Reviens dans mes bras
Parle-moi
La rue vole
Tout s'affole
Tout chante, danse et sourit
Pigeon vole et vive la vie !
The song Pigeon Vole by Charles Trenet captures the excitement of a youthful romance that takes place during the springtime. The singer, who confesses to being in love with his cousin, remembers their time spent on the beach as they anxiously waited for the summer to arrive. The singer describes how they seemed to be innocently behaving on the beach but their emotions were far from chaste, and they were swept up in the excitement that the season and the prospect of love brings.
The song's tone shifts as the singer recalls the passion of their lovemaking, which is captured through the image of objects flying up and around them. The objects, like the pigeon and the hat that fly away, and the shirt and bed that seem to move, reinforce the notion of motion, freedom, and excitement that love can bring. Yet, underpinning this passionate portrayal of love, there is the recognition that grown-up things like marriage and infidelity can lead to heartbreak and tears.
The final lines see the singer encouraging their lover to return to their embraces, and the world seems to come alive as all around them pigeons fly and the streets dance and sing, celebrating their love for each other. Through the song, Trenet encapsulates the exuberance and heartbreak of youthful passion, capturing the essence of what it means to be young and in love.
