Que Reste-t-il De Nos Amours
Charles Trenet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Me parle des amours mortes

Dites-le-moi

Dites-le-moi
Un petit village, un vieux clocher
Un paysage si bien caché
Et dans un nuage, le cher visage

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charles Trenet's Que Reste-t-il De Nos Amours is a reflection on the fleeting nature of love and how it remains only in memories. The singer hears the wind outside his door and is reminded of love that has long since died. As he sits in his house, he is filled with nostalgia, thinking about the distant days of his youth. The song brings to mind the memories of past romance, of stolen kisses, secret promises, and pure caresses in the woods.

Trenet then asks, "What remains of our love? What remains of those beautiful days?" The answer is simple, a faded photograph, a reminder of the past. The memory of the sweet nothings whispered, the pure caresses, and the promises are all just that, memories. The landscape has changed, the people have changed, and the love that once blossomed has faded away into the past.

The repetition of the line, "Que reste-t-il?" (What remains?) throughout the song emphasizes the ephemerality of love and the fleeting nature of life. The phrase is both a question and an exclamation, underscoring the singer's desire to hold on to a time that is already gone.

Overall, the song is a thoughtful reflection on the beauty and tragedy of love and how it remains only in memories. The nostalgic and melancholic tone of the lyrics evokes a sense of wistfulness and regret for what has been lost.

Was bleibt von unserer Liebe

Heute Nacht klopft der Wind an meine Tür
Sprich mir von gestorbner Liebe
Von dem Feuer, das erlischt
Heute Abend ist ein Lied des Herbstes
In dem Haus, das fröstelt
Und ich denke an die fernen Tage

{Refrain}

Was bleibt von unserer Liebe?
Was blieb von diesen schönen Tagen?

Deren Duft dich berauscht
Sie sind verflogen
Warum?

What remains of our loves
What remains of these beautiful days
One photo, old photo
From my youth
What is left of the soft bills
April, appointments
A memory that pursues me
Non-stop
Faded happiness, hair in the wind
Stolen kisses, moving dreams
What remains of it all
Say it to me
A small village, an old bell tower
A landscape so well hidden
And in a cloud the dear face
From my past
Tonight the wind knocking on my door
Talks to me about dead loves
In front of the fire that goes out
Tonight it's an autumn song
In the shuddering house
And I think of the distant days
What remains of our loves
What remains of these beautiful days
One photo, old photo
From my youth...

In reply to a suggestion about my earlier comment, I discovered this translation. I hope it does justice to the original French. You rarely, if ever, find such perceptive song-writing these days. I suppose Charles Aznavour was one of the last. These lyrics certainly strike a chord with me as I grow older and ask myself maybe too many questions about my life. The mind delights in trawling the past, unearthing things perhaps best forgotten. Sometimes memories return of events as if they happened just yesterday instead of decades ago and you absurdly look for a way of changing them and bring a happy outcome to something which pained you, and still does. Anyway, this is the translation I found.

“What remains of our loves?”

Tonight, the wind knocking at my door
speaks to me of past loves
before the dying fire
tonight, an autumn song
quavers through the house
and I think of those bygone days

refrain:
What remains of our loves?
What of those fine days of yore?
A photo, an old photo, of my youth.
What remains of the love letters
the months of April, the rendez-vous?
A memory that pursues me without fail
a shadow of happiness, windblown hair
stolen kisses, moving dreams
what remains of all these things
do tell me?
a little village, an old bell tower
fields and meadows, well tucked away
and in a cloud, the cherished face
of my past days.

The words, the tender words that are murmured
the caresses purest of the pure
the vows exchanged deep in the woods
the flowers one finds among the pages of a book
whose perfume quakes and stirs
have all blown away, oh why?

I once worked on a BBC documentary about English expats in the Vichy area of France and this song was used. I never forgot it and, years later, and after some searching, found it was this one. Beautiful. What a wonderful era for songwriting and a more sensitive style of singing.

@maiqueashworth

I came to this site because this song’s music has been associated with other lyrics in English, “I Wish You Love” and that song touched my heart so I wanted to know more about it and thus learned that Charles Trent wrote it with different lyrics in French. These lyrics are just as touching as the English ones, though they aren’t anywhere near the same (the English version is not a translation of the French lyrics). Beautiful songs, made that way through Trenet’s captivating music. Thank you Charles Trenet for your musical excellence.
