It Won
Charley Patton Lyrics

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you

Every night when everybody has fun
Here am I sitting all on my own

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

Every night the tears come down from my eyes
Every day I've done nothing but cry

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

So every day we'll be happy I know
Not I know that you won't leave me no more

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah

It won't be long yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, till I belong to you, woo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Charley Patton's song "It Won't Be Long" are a simple expression of love and longing. The singer, who has been left alone since his/her partner left, is eagerly waiting for them to return. The refrain "It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah" expresses the singer's hope and anticipation that they will soon be reunited with their loved one. The verses describe the singer's loneliness and sadness in the absence of their partner and their determination to be good and happy once they return.

The song could be interpreted to suggest that the singer has been unfaithful or has otherwise acted in a way that caused their partner to leave. This is indicated in the line "I'll be good like I know I should", suggesting that the singer intends to change their ways and make things right. The use of the word 'till' instead of 'until' in the refrain could also be interpreted to suggest that the reunion will be temporary or fleeting.

Overall, the lyrics to "It Won't Be Long" evoke a sense of longing and anticipation for the return of a loved one, as well as a sense of regret for past mistakes.

To me they sound completely different. You can hear the native American musical influence clearly in Charley Patton. Down the dirt road blues sounds almost like native American vocalization with an early blues guitar. So different!
