Mind Reader Blues
Charley Patton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I can see just what′s on your mind
Baby, I can see just what's on your mind
You got a long black woman with a gold teeth in her face

I take a long look right smack down in your mind
I take a long look right smack down in your mind
And I don′t see but one woman rambling up and down the line
Don't kid your mama, you ain't foolin′ nobody but yourself
Don′t kid your mama, you ain't foolin′ nobody but yourself
And when I see on your mind, you would not have no friend

I remember a day when I were livin' at Lula town
I remember a day when I were livin′ at Lula town
My man done so many wrong things 'til I had to leave the town

I′m by the riverside, my man caught the transfer boat
I'm by the riverside, my man caught the transfer boat
And the last time I see'd him he had done gone way up the road

Well I′m worried now, and I won′t be worried long

Well I'm worried now, and I won′t be worried long
Well I'm worried now, and I won′t be worried long

Overall Meaning

In Charley Patton and Bertha Lee's song "Mind Reader Blues," the singer claims to have insight into the thoughts and emotions of the person they are speaking to. They assert that they can see "just what's on [their] mind," and describe what they see: a woman with gold teeth. The singer further asserts that the person they are speaking to is not fooling anyone but themselves, and that they would be friendless if others could see what the singer sees. The song then takes a turn to recount an experience in which the singer had to leave town because of the misdeeds of their partner. The song concludes with the singer expressing worry, but also declaring that their worry won't last long.

Just discovered Bertha and learned she was Charlie's common law wife. Man what a talent the two of them were. Does anyone know if that's Charlie on guitar?

According to the sleeve notes on my Charley Patton Complete Recordings box set; yes, Charley played guitar on this and Yellow Bee. He was happy just to accompany her and let her take the spotlight on these songs.
