For those out of the loop, Charli XCX has been making an album in quarantine for the past month with her producers over Zoom, and even including her fans in the process. For this music video, she had fans send in various clips and it's edited together beautifully. I already loved the song before, but this video really elevated it for me.

I didn't expect much from this video and I didn't expect to be hit with such a heavy wave of emotions. It just made me really miss being outside with my friends. Somehow, it made me feel incredibly connected to all the other people with whom I share this world, and, for a pop music video, I really appreciate how grounded it seemed. I tend to see pop music as this thing that helps me escape from day-to-day life, but now something has clicked for me and I realize that pop music actually is based around and created in daily life — both go hand in hand.

As much as this entire situation sucks, I'm at least happy that people are deciding to use this opportunity to make art. We need it now more than ever. And years from now when we're well past this, music videos like this can serve as a time capsule.

The videos for claws, and forever both make me nostalgic for the brief period of time in early 2020 when there was still collective hope that we'd all make it through rona together and squish the virus early. Unfortunately, my country decided that money was more important than human life, and threw caution to the wind with reopening too much too quick. So many lives lost... But I do believe that a great number of people gained a more grounded and less rose tinted view of how the world REALLY works, which is needed to bring about actual change, to stop the rampant destruction of our habitat for a handful of people that pull all the strings of society. The lyrics mixed with the visuals dropping during times like these kind of perfectly capture that angst so many of us have, not only now in quarantine but as burgeoning adults who aren’t sure of our timelines, trajectories, or what our lives will look like in the nearer-than-distant future. The tragedy that has accompanied the mortality rate of the virus is the way it’s strained our already limited time to enjoy existing in the liminal state between childhood and adulthood with peers who are as mutually apprehensive as ourselves. It’s tough losing this time with each other, but hopefully we will all learn from this experience that has affected each and every one of us in some capacity. Hopefully we will be better to each other, usher in some much-needed institutional changes, and reevaluate ourselves along the way. I’m glad to know more people will see this video in the coming days, as Charli is finally at least a name people have heard of in the industry or on the charts. As someone who’s been with her since before True Romance, I’m happy to see people seeing her in a certain way during this crisis. She crashed my friend’s Zoom the other day, she gave us a beautiful album not even a year ago, and now she blesses us with this time stamp on the human condition. I love you always, Charli. There hasn’t been one day where I haven’t thought of Casey but I don’t have an emotional attachment to him anymore like I used to. I know that if I start overthinking and putting too much though into him, I’ll start to feel anger sometimes or even insecure as he betrayed me deeply. That boy broke my heart. But life is so good and the sun is coming out more! I’m so blessed to have my family and friends who were there for me through everything. Always allow yourself to feel what you need to feel even when it gets to be too much. Become friends with your feelings and get familiar with them, the more you feel then the less you’ll feel them.
