London Queen
Charli XCX Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Right away from Holloway
I said "Mum, this isn't a holiday
Listen up, I ain't coming back
'Til I can fill the shack up with all gold plaques"
Soon come, home run (wack!)
Locket out the park with a baseball bat

When I'm driving on the wrong side of the road
I feel like JFK you know

I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Doing things the American way
I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Living the dream like a London Queen

Now I live in Hollywood
I can't stop even though I know I should
It feels so good, oh yeah, oh oh

When I'm driving on the wrong side of the road
I feel like JFK you know

I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Doing things the American way
I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Living the dream like a London Queen

I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Doing things the American way
I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Living the dream like a London Queen

Living the dream like a London Queen
Living the dream like a London Queen
Living the dream like a London Queen
Living the dream like a London Queen

I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Doing things the American way
I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Living the dream like a London Queen

I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Doing things the American way
I never thought I'd be living in the USA
Living the dream like a London Queen

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charli XCX's "London Queen" celebrate her journey from Holloway to Hollywood and the fact that she is living the dream of a London Queen in the USA. The opening lines of the song - "Right away from Holloway, I said 'Mum, this isn't a holiday' listen up, I ain't coming back/'Til I can fill the shack up with all gold plaques" - suggest that Charli was determined from an early age to make it big in the music industry, and was willing to leave her hometown and travel to the other side of the world to do so.

The references to baseball and American culture in the second verse ("Soon come, home run (wack!)/Locket out the park with a baseball bat") suggest that Charli has fully embraced the American way of life, despite her roots in London. The recurring line "Living the dream like a London Queen" reinforces the idea that Charli feels like she is living the best of both worlds, with success both in her homeland and in America.

However, there is a sense of conflict in the song as well, as Charli admits that she struggles to stop pursuing her goals, despite knowing she should take a break: "Now I live in Hollywood/I can't stop, even though I know I should/It feels so good, oh yeah, oh oh". The repeated references to driving on the wrong side of the road and feeling like JFK suggest that Charli is taking risks and living life to the fullest, but also that she is aware of the potential dangers of such a lifestyle.

I'm agree with you. I saw her Live in September here in Mexico and the couple new songs that she sang are so good in Live, plus the other 5-6 new songs in her U.S.A Tour like* 'Need your love' & 'Caught in the middle' * are totally amazing.
Now, she is from the early *90's *, like 'I don't care'. And she as too many others including me, we like the music from that decade. If i were a singer i would try to sing music like that and from the artists/bands that I like.
Actually this album looks that have this kind of music, something kinda pop-punk-rock-pop. It's totally differently to her previous album.
In an interview she said that she'll never do it again an album with too many beats like 'True Romance'.
I'm anxious for buy her physical album, but i haven't idea when it will release here.

If english were my native lenguaje I'll would write something more, but I'm doing my best.

Cheers & Good Luck to 'Midas Queen'.

I think a lot of people don't "get" what Charli is doing with Sucker. She doesn't want to make the same music twice, the style is very different from True Romance (which was badass by the way). Sucker sounds like something the now-classic girl bands back in the '90s (bow wow wow, and '80s waitresses) came out with, with some punk energy thrown in. One thing everyone fails to understand is OBVIOUSLY THIS TYPE OF MUSIC IS SUPPOSED TO BE KITSCH (think "i want candy" or "wannabe"), it's completely necessary, and Charli knows that, she's doing exactly what she set out to do. So no it's not that the songs aren't as good, it's just a very different direction, she's brave to be doing such an obviously polarizing decision. I've listened to quite a few songs from Sucker live, and it's gonna be fucking amazing.

Adan Garcia high five! :) Charli's music is definitely influenced by a lot of other music so yeah it won't appeal to everyone. I think Need Your Love will be my favorite track form Sucker, can't wait for the album.
