Byrd primarily looked up to Django Reinhardt. He moved to Washington, D.C., to study classical guitar with the renowned Sophocles Papas. He later moved to Italy where he studied with Andrés Segovia. In the early 1960's he was on a State Department tour in South America where he was introduced to a new music, the bossa nova, which was the musical passion of Brazil beginning in the late 50's. Jazz saxophonist Stan Getz had been in Brazil about six months earlier than Byrd, also on a State Department tour, where he, too, was exposed to the bossa nova. A short time later Getz called Byrd in D.C. and suggested the idea that they collaborate on a bossa nova album. That album was the introduction of bossa nova to North America.
He is perhaps most well known as a collaborator with Stan Getz on the Jazz Samba album, which featured many themes of bossa nova, and of course, samba.
Golden Earrings
Charlie Byrd Lyrics

That when your love wears golden earrings,
She belongs to you.
An old love story that's known to very few,
But if you wear those golden earrings,
Love will come to you.
By the burning fire, they will glow with ev'ry coal.
So be my gypsy,
Make love your guiding light,
And let that pair of golden earrings
Cast their spell tonight.
The lyrics of Charlie Byrd's "Golden Earrings" talk about a legend or old love story that is known only to a few people, mostly the gypsies. The story suggests that when a woman wears golden earrings, it signifies that she belongs to her lover. The singer of the song encourages his potential love interest to wear golden earrings, so that their love can blossom. He believes that the power of the golden earrings will ignite desire and passion within them both, and they will be drawn to each other.
The lyrics describe how the golden earrings create an aura around the wearer, almost like a magical force field that attracts the opposite sex. When the earrings are worn by the woman, they will glow with the fire and catch the attention of her lover. The singer of the song is seeking a gypsy companion who is adventurous and open to love. The idea of being a gypsy and making love the guiding light implies that the singer is looking for a romantic relationship that is free from constraints and rules. The song suggests that if the two parties allow the golden earrings to cast their spell, their relationship will flourish.
