I
Charlie Haden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I may get along, when love is gone
Still, you made your mark, here in my heart

One day I'll fly away
Leave your love to yesterday
What more can your love do for me?
When will love be through with me?
I follow the night
Can't stand the light
When will will I begin
My life again?

One day I'll fly away
Leave your love to yesterday
What more can your love do fot me?
When will love be through with me?

Why live life from dream to dream
And dread the day when dreaming ends

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlie Haden's song, "I" is a melancholic reflection on lost love and the struggle to move on from it. The lyrics suggest that the singer is struggling to cope with the aftermath of a love that has ended. The first line of the song, "I may get along when love is gone" suggests that the singer has accepted that the relationship is over, however, the second line, "Still, you made your mark here in my heart" suggests that the memories of the past love are hard to ignore, and have left a deep imprint on the singer's heart.

The chorus, "One day I'll fly away, leave your love to yesterday" suggests the hope for a life without the pain of the past relationship. The question, "What more can your love do for me? When will love be through with me?" implies that the singer sees love as a burden, something that has caused them pain and they are ready to move on from.

The end of the song is a lament, questioning the purpose of living life from dream to dream when eventually the dreams will come to an end. The lyrics, "why live life from dream to dream and dread the day when dreaming ends," suggests the fleeting nature of life and the importance of living in the present, no matter how painful it might be.

Yes, this album bought decades ago and now rediscovered. My taped version had finally given up. Thank you for this magic listening again. I saw Charlie Haden live at the Leeds Playhouse in 1980, my landlady was a look alike of his wife, Ellen David. These creative giants are missed.
