To repeat (and repeat), that's Miles playing trumpet (with cup mute). There should be no debate here, as the relevant discographical info is as follows:
Charlie Parker Quintet
Miles Davis, trumpet; Charlie Parker, alto sax; Duke Jordan, piano; Tommy Potter, bass; Max Roach, drums.

I find Miles Davis very Underrated during this period, he actually played some great solos. Quite clearly he could play or he wouldn't be in Bird's Band.

Bruce Scott

This was Yard's working band. Charlie Parker, alto; Miles Davis, trumpet; Duke Jordan, piano; Tommy Potter, bass; Max Roach, drums. Recorded on December 21st, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. BIRD GETS THE WORM was composed by Charlie Parker. It's based on the changes of LOVER, COME BACK TO ME!

Hyperclefonical598

Hey, alright I've seen the light! lol It is of course Miles; here attempting to play like the inimitable Dizzy but still managing some articulate lines, mostly in close range but cool nonetheless. Separately, I find Duke Jordan's piano solo to be a nicely spacious break from everyone else's rapidity that still manages some melodic voice leading.
I have come to dig Miles not merely for what he did not or (could not) play, but even for what he did play. The daunting obstacles of his predecessors coupled with his talent, molded perhaps by his quasi-Julliard technique pushed him to forge an original path. So its pretty neat to hear the contrast between his efforts (including the forbidden quoting of Cherokee with Parker's beautiful harmony) on the false take of "Koko", before Diz played the trumpet parts; and his more developed, yet "hot" playing on recordings like "Tempus Fugit". Check it.

mtobrien89

i must have listened to this a thousand times without ever really noticing how much the piano player struggles!! there's no way he can keep up with bird and miles on this one. reminds me of tommy flannagan on giant steps.

Hyperclefonical598

In a way, sure. Yet, his spacious solo kinda serves to hold the piece together in balance; surrounded by everyone else's fast playing.

Thomas Leary

Pure … Utter … Joy!

nonamenanone

Bird always plays energetic like his life.

sdmiz

i didnt know miles could play that fast

Bruce Scott

sdmiz ...With all due respect, Miles couldn't play fast. However, if you listen to his solo very closely, the notes are close together. Miles was not a master of the breakneck tempo. I love Miles' music, but, he didn't have a fast tongue. Trumpeters used call it "mumbling."

LRN_News

Which year would you say jazz and bebop started to have this type of drumming and drum sound? They were already pretty developed here in 1947 and pretty good at recording drums compared to early 40s and 30s
