Lover Man
Charlie Parker Quintet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something I never had
Never had no kissin'
Oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

The night is cold and I'm so alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me
But no one to love me
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems

Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
Hugging and a-kissing

Oh, what I've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlie Parker Quintet's song Loverman express the loneliness and longing of someone who has yet to experience romantic love. The first stanza sets the tone for the entire song as the singer states that they do not know why they are feeling sad but that they long to try something new, something they have never had. This longing to experience something new and untried is directly linked with a lack of physical intimacy, as the singer has "never had no kissin'" and is lamenting the "lover man" who is not yet in their life.

The second stanza further highlights the singer's loneliness, as they are alone on a cold night with only the moon above them. However, there is still hope for the future as the singer believes that one day they will meet the "lover man" who will make all their dreams come true. The third stanza provides a glimmer of hope for the singer, as they discuss the thrill of romance and how it can be like a heavenly dream. The singer's belief in the transformative power of love is reflected in their prayer that the "lover man" will make love to them, "strange as it seems."

Overall, the lyrics of Loverman are a poignant expression of loneliness and longing for romantic love. The singer's words reflect the universal desire for human connection, and the hope that even in the darkest moments, there is still the possibility of finding love.

Well - according to the movie "BIRD" directed by Clint Eastwood, there is a scene with this song. He found out just before playing the song LOVER MAN that his newly born daughter had just died. So he took a hit and heavily drugged himself and recorded this song. If you listen closely, you'll hear his late entrances etc etc etc.......but still, the record is just great!!!!!!
