How can such beauty exist? A moment in time, and a painful one at that. But the result, despite Yardbird's disdain for an interesting error that ended up in expressing the emotions of the ballad anyway, was the most gorgeous rendition that not even Billie Holiday's wonderful version could rival. Charlie's harmonics at the end are the stuff dreams are made of. Like it or not, Bird, this one of yours is one of Jazz's memorable highlights.

I think this is one Bird's most emotional playing ever, you can hear and feel the pain and loneliness in his sax sound and phrasing. I love his ballads and tunes with strings, he slows down and allows the sax to fully express the emotion of the song.

Charlie Parker did two recordings of this song. The one here is the second recording for Verve records done in 1951.
The first recording on the Dial label was done in 1946. It was during this recording that Parker was so intoxicated he needed to be supported by producer Ross Russell to play the song. That recording is much freer and the one that Charlie Mingus considered to be among Parker's greatest recordings, despite its flaws

Charles Mingus called it one of Parker’s best—what it lacked in proficiency was transformed by soul. I find the phrasing absolutely mesmerizing. It is a work of an exhausted genius, really, who still manages these flourishes of creative brilliance.

Nel periodo californiano soffriva profondamente delle crisi di astinenza: Bird era un eroinomane e, a differenza di NY, non riusciva a procurarsi facilmente la droga che lo "aiutava" a calmarsi. L'astinenza lo portava ad essere preda di forti attacchi mentali: a volte si dimostrava violento e scontroso per cambiare totalmente il suo umore in una persona gentile e alla mano. La mancanza di droga portò Parker a bere di continuo: credo che, tramite il sax, esprimeva chiaramente il suo stato d'animo e il suo modo di essere.

I know it's amazing! He's this sick and how he can still produce this great tragic art, but Jazz at its essence is music from tragedy, so it makes perfect sense. What a waste that so few people can understand the existential crisis being portrayed through parker's music here. Philosophers have debated for thousands of years about the existence of a soul. This recording proves that humans do have a soul because anyone with any sense of sensitivity can hear the pain in his soul (being expressed through his horn). In this this recording, Parker proves that there is a soul. Meaning, there is an entity that is totally separate from any biological construction. Descartes would have loved this recording!!! It would have proved his entire theory of dualism (Mind and body) correct!

parker had a lot of troubles in his life, and he did a lot of drugs and drank a lot of alcohol. I'm pretty sure he was drunk in this recording tho

He didn't have any heroin when this was recorded. He'd moved to california, where heroin wasn't very widely available and was using alcohol as a substitute. The legend goes that in this session he drank a quart of whiskey before recording and had to be held up and yelled at to play.

Honestly I'm here because the lead singer of the metal band Slipknot mentioned this piece in his book. He said that this had him in tears and I understand why. This is beautiful but so heavy at the same time. How incredible that music can make you feel so much all at once.

No one has ever commented on Charlie's uncompromising, harsh, solid, sometimes-sour, conviction. (Well, Dizzy hinted at it in his way)
The conviction was everything, here it's the same, only wounded. It doesn't surprise me that Parker lamented and cursed the release of these recordings, after all, he was capable of the same musicality in good health too.
It is a voyersistic insight I am happy we can enjoy, in the context of everything else he did.

Parker may have been trashed here, but the series of notes starting at 1.30 and descending exquisitely to 1.43 place this track up there with best. Who knows....if Parker had been sober he may have played entirely differently and these notes would have been lost forever.

E considera che, psicologicamente, era a terra: alla fine dell'incisione di Lover man, tutti i presenti rimasero in silenzio per quanto fosse bella e, al tempo stesso, malinconica l'esibizione di Bird. Fu lo stesso Parker a insistere a incidere Lover man, come seconda traccia, visto che non era prevista: durante l'esibizione era presente, nella stanza di registrazione, anche uno psichiatra per aiutarlo in caso avesse avuto qualche problema. Era un genio che se ne è andato via troppo presto.

Why did Plato debate as to wether there was a soul? Anyone who listens to this understands that there is a soul because Parker is playing his tutored soul. Tutored by racism, ignorance, ruthlessness and indifference. What a beautiful piece of art. He was angry when it was released because of its imperfection, but the imperfections adds to its beauty.

@ricardo moyano Honestamente está tocada con un millón de defectos y pifias. Su valor es que es una fotografía del momento que estaba viviendo Bird. Logra traspasar su angustia en cada mal soplido. La versión de Verve del 51 es superior técnicamente, al menos la toca de forma correcta porque se trata de una melodía de amor, pero no tiene ni por asomo el corazón y la emocionalidad de esta pieza angustiosa, que con todos su defectos fue la que pasó a la historia (pero no por estar bien tocada).

I think that Charlie Parker would want us to remember this great solo. The background status is secondary to the art and beautiful music here. Let us return to transcending moments in our musical history and not dwell on the momentary state of the artist. I think that Bird would want us to here 'the beauty of his 'song' and not his circumstance.

1) Bird hated this track, never forgave the label for releasing it. 2) It is, undeniably, his greatest work. In particular because of where he was at when he made it. The background of the piece -- the bullshit in his life, the alcohol and heroin, the chaotic stumble through the periphery of society -- to get through that and make something beautiful is heart breaking. It's like seeing a delicate flower emerge from a vast landfill. That is some brilliant jazz.

Hey!! You make a good point, it may be very intimate, but that is why it is so beautiful. Remember, most of Beethoven's piano sonatas were never meant to be performed or listened to; however, they are great.
Parker was technically amazing and clean, but this shows he can express raw pain. In art there is great beauty in imperfection.With all of the mistakes in it, it is still amazing and beautiful. Very few artist can accomplish this. As I said before, if you don't believe that humans have a soul, this may convince you. Its convinced me more than any church sermon. Where ever Parker's soul is, I hope it is at peace. This has a lot of imperfection, but that is part of its beauty. No insult, but compliment here. This is the best thing he has ever done. What amazing beauty!!!!

Sí, eso ya lo sabía. Lo que digo es que para algunos la canción "Amorous" nombrada en el cuento se corresponde a "Lover man". Me gustaría saber si alguien leyó el cuento y escuchó la música me pueda explicar el por qué de esa correspondencia. Parker stava male,sudava copiosamente e non riusciva a controllare i suoi movimenti. Di tanto in tanto improvvisamente il suo sassofono si impennava puntando verso il soffitto. Registro' con fatica Max is making wax. Il medico gli diede delle pastiglie ma non servi a nulla. Poi su richiesta di Charlie fu inciso Lover Man.
