Break Up
Charlie Rich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, that little guy you been seein' most every day
Shouldn't be allowed to come and take my baby away
Baby, why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Well, I saw you walkin' with him just the other night
I almost flipped when I saw him squeeze you tight
Baby, why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Don't you remember all the things that we used to do
Before he came along and looked at you?
Don't you remember when you said you loved me so?
Baby, now please don't go

And I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do
Because if you like him, and I know he likes you
Baby, why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Don't you remember all the things that we used so do
Before he came along and looked at you?
Don't you remember when you said you loved me so?
Baby, now please don't go

And I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do
Because if you like him, and I know that he likes you
Baby, why don't you wake up, all we gotta do is make up
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Come on baby, don't break up with me
Come on baby, don't break up with me

Overall Meaning

The song "Break Up" by Charlie Rich is a raw and emotional plea from a man to his girlfriend not to leave him for another guy. The lyrics convey a sense of confusion and desperation as he tries to understand why she is leaving and what he can do to change her mind. The singer is trying to hold on to their love by reminding her of all the good times they had before and that they can still work things out.

The opening lines set the tone for the song, with the singer expressing his dissatisfaction with the other guy taking his girlfriend away. He then pleads with her to wake up and reconcile with him because their relationship is worth saving. The verse continues to paint a picture of the other guy stealing his girl away from him, making him feel threatened and vulnerable. The chorus serves as a repetition of the plea for reconciliation, with the singer trying to convince his girlfriend not to break up with him.

The second verse adds more heartache to the mix as he reminisces about the times they spent together before the other guy came along. The singer is desperate to hold on to the memories and the love they had shared. He acknowledges that he doesn't know what to do if she decides to leave him for the other guy, but he does know that he wants her to stay.

Overall, "Break Up" is a sentimental and romantic song that resonates with anyone who has been in a relationship and had the fear of losing their partner to someone else. The lyrics tug at the heartstrings and are complemented by Rich's soulful vocals, which make the song even more moving.

Brilliant remixed version with the best Elvis ETA there ever was, and he had a super career away from just singing Elvis, Jimmy Ellis (AKA Orion) RIP

MrRockabilly70

This is a Jimmy Ellis (Orion) and Charlie Rich duet released around 1979-1980. Orion's manager, Shelby Singleton at the time organised these sessions at Sun Records to market Orion (an Elvis sound alike) by singing duets with Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee and Carl Perkins. This track is off the album called Sun trio + friends where Ellis does duets of various songs with all three of the singers.
