Don't put no headstone on my grave,
All my life I've been a slave,
Want the whole wide world to know,
That I'm the man that loved you so

Mama, mama, don't you cry,
I'm gonna meet you in the by and by, in the sweet by and by
Tell papa I'm comin' home, comin' on home,
God, it can't be very long

Don't put no headstone on my grave,
All my life I've been a slave,
Want the whole wide world to know,
That I'm the stud that loved you so

M,m,m,m,m,m mama don't you cry,
Lord, I'm gonna meet you in the by and by, in the sweet by and by
Tell papa I'm coming home,
Oh God, it can't be very long

Don't put no headstone on my grave,
Whoooh! All my life I've been a slave, motherhumpin' slave
And you know something? I want the world to know,
That I'm the stud that loved that woman so

Mama, mama don't you cry, mama, don't cry,
I'm gonna meet you in the by and by, in the sweet by and by
Tell papa, I'm coming home, Oh Lord,
You know, it can't be very long

(One more time now)
Don't put a headstone on my grave
All my liiiife I've been a slave,
Want the whooooole wide world to know,
That I'm the man,
That loved,
That loooved,

Don't put no headstone on my grave,
All my life I've been a slave, whoooh!
I want the whole wide world to know,
That I'm the stud that loved you so

Ma-ma-ma-ma mama, don't you cry, whooh! Don't cry!
I'm-a-gonna meet you in the by and by, in the sweet by and by,
Tell papa I'm coming home, coming on home...
...And you know something ladies?
Oh, God, it can't be very loooong

Overall Meaning

Charlie Rich's song Don't Put No Headstone on My Grave gives the impression of a man who has been a slave all his life and is now asking for one thing after he passes away. He doesn't want a headstone on his grave because all his life, he had been living for others as a slave. He wants the whole world to know that he was the man that loved his woman so. The song is emotional as he tells his mother that she shouldn't cry because he will meet her in the sweet by and by. He asks her to tell his father that he's coming home soon, and it can't be long.

The song might be interpreted in different ways, but one of the most apparent interpretations is that the man had lived all his life for someone else, not for himself, and he only found true love with his woman. He does not want to be remembered as a slave but as a man who loved his woman so much. He feels that he has lived a life of submission and wants to be free at least in death. The song is undoubtedly a reflection of the enslavement of black people in America's history and the desire for freedom in life and death.

Love this, Charlie was one the the great stylists!

Rich considered himself a jazz pianist and had not paid much attention to country music since childhood. While stationed in Enid, Oklahoma, he formed "the Velvetones," playing jazz and blues and featuring his wife, Margaret Ann, on vocals. So much for the "country music singer" title !!!

THIS, is the kind of music that stops you in your tracks and you have to listen! Love when something catches my ear and I can't immediately name it.. I've never heard this version (or possibly the song) before.. It is now on my favorites! Thank you for posting it!!! I see much enjoyment ahead on a rediscovery of Mr. Rich!!! "Who will the next fool be?" Not me. :-D

I highly recommend "Essential Charlie Rich: Feel Like Going Home." After that, you should get complete Smash sessions, Hi sessions, Grove/RCA sessions, and as much of his recordings at Sun Record as you can get. Brilliant stuff on all those. And I recommend a lot of his Epic recordings, especially the early stuff.

Love This!!!

Why doesn't all of his songs have this feel and style?

Listen to that left Hand !
Charlie could swing.
Long before he lit envelopes on fire, he recorded this.
RIP, the great, Charlie Rich.

Great song. There’s a great version of this I heard on one of Oxford American compilation CDs that I have somewhere. A female artist. Anyone know who that might be?

pappyvanwinkle1

The song was written by Charlie and the only version I’ve heard sung by a female is Esther Phillips version. Could be that one you’re referring to? Thanks for stopping by!
