Peace On You
Charlie Rich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God ain't gonna love you any
'Cause you loved too many more
He ain't gonna trust you baby
He never could before
God ain't gonna like the way
You cheated on me down here below
He ain't gonna love you any
'Cause you loved too many more
Besides me baby, yeah

Peace in the valley
Peace in the sea
Peace to all the little children and me
And peace on you

God ain't gonna love you any
'Cause you loved too many more
He ain't gonna trust you baby
He never could before
If I was you then I'd start wondering
Which direction I would go
He ain't gonna love you any
'Cause you loved too many more
Besides me baby, yeah

Peace in the valley
Peace in the sea

Peace to all the little children and me
And peace on you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlie Rich's song "Peace On You" are about a person who cheated on the singer and how God will not forgive this person for their actions. The singer conveys that the person will suffer the consequences of their infidelity both on Earth and in the afterlife. The lyrics suggest that God will not love or trust the person anymore because they have loved too many others besides the singer. The song expresses how the cheater will have to live with their actions and face the judgment of the divine.

The chorus of the song, "Peace in the valley, peace in the sea, peace to all the little children and me, and peace on you," indicates that the singer wishes peace for everyone including the person who cheated on them. The peace the singer wishes for all represents a desire for a harmony between all human beings, including those who have caused harm. The chorus demonstrates a sense of empathy and forgiveness, indicating that the singer does not hold rancor against the cheater.

Overall, "Peace On You" is a song that reflects the complexities of human emotions such as love, resentment, empathy, and forgiveness. It encompasses themes of love, cheating, and divine judgment, while simultaneously wishing peace for all individuals.

My mom would play the "Behind Closed Doors" album ever Saturday afternoon when we lived in Los Angeles, and besides the title track and "Most Beautiful Woman" "Peace on You" was all time favorite. Just imagine a little black kid in South Central Los Angeles in the 70's singing this song during recess (at the top of my lungs) over and over. I would give anything to go back to those days....The Silver Fox and his music helped with shape a good portion of my youth.

Charlie said he grew up in an Arkansas neighborhood where he was the only white family within five miles. He said in an interview once he learned to play piano by the black church and his music style was inspired by the blues and church musicans around him. He crossed boundaries just as well if not better than Elvis. He said his biggest inspiration was Ray Charles. He started out as a blues musician signed to Sun Records in Memphis and then morphed into country later on in his career.
