Before going solo, Robison was in the bands Chaparral, Millionaire Playboys, and Two Hoots and a Holler. At one point, Robison was on Warner Brothers, but apparently did not see eye to eye about his musical career there and left to release some albums on his own. Among his releases was a live disc also featuring brother Bruce Robison and Jack Ingram that was put out by Sony's Lucky Dog label. He then went to Dualtone Records.
Robison was a judge on the first season of the TV singing competition Nashville Star.
He married Emily Erwin of the Dixie Chicks in 1999 (the couple divorced on August 6, 2008). They have three children together: Charles Augustus, called "Gus", born November 11, 2002 and twins Julianna Tex (9:19pm, 6 lb 10 oz) and Henry Benjamin (9:29pm, 6 lb 14 oz), born on April 14, 2005. All three children were conceived via invitro fertilization.

Loving County
Charlie Robison Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She lived out in Pecos, and pretty as she could be
And I worked the rigs on out in Odessa
To give her whatever she needs
But that girl, she run with an oil company bum
'Cause the diamond was not on her hand
And he left her soon 'neath the big loving moon
Now I sit in my car at the New Rainbow Bar downtown
And the frost on the windshield shines toward the sky
Like a thousand tiny diamonds in the lights of loving county
Well, l walked in that bar and I drank myself crazy
Thinking about her and that man
When in walked a woman, looking richer than sin
And ten years worth of work on her hand
Well, I followed her home and when she was alone
Well, I put my gun to her head
And I don't recall what happened next at all
But now that rich woman, she is dead
Now I drive down the highway
Ten miles from my sweet baby's arms
And the moon is so bright it don't look like night
And the diamond how it sparkles in the lights of loving county
But she opened that door and I knelt on the floor
And I put that ring in her hand
Then she said, "I do" and she'd leave with me soon
To the rigs out in South Alabama
Well, I told her to hide that ring there inside
And wait 'til the timing was good
And I drove back home and I was alone
'Cause I thought that she understood
The next night an old friend just called me to wish us both well
He said, he'd seen her downtown, sashaying around
And her diamond how it sparkled in the lights of loving county
Well that sheriff, he found me out wandering
All around El Paso the very next day
You see, I'd lost my mind on that broken white line
Before I even reached Balmorhea
Well, now she's in Fort Worth and she's just giving birth
To the son of that oil company man
And they buried that poor old sheriff's dead wife
With the ring that I stole on her hand
And sometimes they let me look up at that East Texas sky
And the rain on the pines, oh Lord, how it shines
Like my darling's little diamond in the lights of loving county
The song "Loving County" by Charlie Robison is a tragic tale of love and jealousy that turns into violence. The song's protagonist was deeply in love with a girl from Pecos, and he worked hard on the rigs in Odessa to provide for her. But the girl left him for an oil company executive, leaving him heartbroken. The singer goes to a bar where he drinks himself into a stupor, fantasizes about revenge, and ultimately kills a wealthy woman he mistakes for his ex's new lover.
The song then shifts back to the singer's love for his ex-girlfriend. He wants to marry her and start a new life with her in South Alabama. But he is arrested for the murder he committed earlier in the song. The song ends with the singer looking up at the East Texas sky, remembering his love's diamond ring, and lamenting the tragic events that have unfolded.
The song's tragic plot is intensified by Robison's poignant lyrics and mournful delivery. His raw and emotional interpretation highlights the pain and desperation of the song's protagonist.

A subtle point some people may not notice: most of the song takes place in the arid deserts and plains of West Texas, but the final verse has the protagonist speaking of pine trees and East Texas. The infamous state execution chamber of Texas is located in Huntsville...a city in the piney woods of East Texas.
