In Your Hands
Charlie Winston Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mother
I've gotta get out of here
So I can save our family
From this poverty
And when I make my money
I'll send it back to you

Father
Give me strength, I pray
I have to end this misery
It's causing too much pain
I'm gonna look for richer lands
Where the money's made

I'm gonna put my whole World
In your hands
I have to put my whole World
In your hands
In your hands

Mister
Please let me work somehow
You've kept me waiting 18 months
And still I'm not allowed
And every time you promise me
"Not much longer now"

I've had to put my whole world
In your hands
I'm gonna put my whole world
In your hands
In your hands

Hey, hey, oho
Listen, listen to me

Mister! Mister! You say you're trying
But don't you know my brother's dying
You say "it won't be long"
But why am I so cursed
For where I am born?
I know

You've got my whole world
In your hands
I've had to put my whole world
In your hands
I'm gonna put my whole world
In your hands
I've had to put my whole world

In your hands
In your hands

Overall Meaning

The song "In Your Hands" by Charlie Winston is a heart-rending plea to those in power to alleviate poverty and the struggles that come with it. The lyrics are crafted as a conversation between a son, a father, and a young man who's desperate to find work. The son wants to leave his family's impoverished lifestyle and make something of himself, promising to send money back home when he succeeds. The father prays for strength to end the family's misery and find better opportunities elsewhere. The young man in the third verse implores the person in charge to give him work and fulfill their promises of employment, highlighting the desperation that comes with unemployment and financial instability.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the trust that the characters have in the people they are speaking to, entrusting them with their entire world. This emphasizes the vulnerability of those who struggle with poverty and their dependence on the goodwill of others who can alleviate their struggles. The song weaves a poignant narrative of the challenges faced by many, as seems particularly relevant in the current social and economic climate worldwide.

I've known this song since I was a young teen, but as a French native with approximate English, I never really understood the lyrics entirely until tonight.

Life was already tough back then, but I didn't understand poverty as much as I do now. Tonight I listened to this and cried, not much for me, but for those I love.

Take care of yourselves, and do what you can afford to, to dismantle capitalism keeping so many of us in this.

Once upon a time Peter Gabriel recommended Charlie Winston. Went to see him in NYC. I was blown away.
His music is meaningful, truthful and full of energy, carrying you from one important place to another. I lost the connection for a while, but now so happy to be reconnecting, and to catch up with some new inspiring stuff.
