Could It Be
Charlie Worsham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm finally holding what I been hoping for
We had a few drinks
Some laughs at the bar
Stayed out too late
And went a little too far
Oh but wakin' up
With you on my chest
I had a pounding heart, and achin' head, and no regrets

Who knows, we might go down in flames
Then again I might just change your name

Could it be I'm finally holding
What I've been hoping for
Could it be the end of just friends
The start of something more
Oh the way I'm feeling now
It's worth sticking around to see
Is this love
Or could it be

Rule number one
Friends don't break
We could write it off
As a sweet mistake
Only time will tell
If we were wrong or right
All I know is I don't want to be alone tonight

Who knows, we might go down in flames
Then again I might just change your name

Could it be I'm finally holding
What I've been hoping for
Could it be the end of just friends
The start of something more
Oh the way I'm feeling now
It's worth sticking around to see
Is this love
Or could it be

We wound up here so naturally
Me and you baby
You and me
Could it be
Could it be

Could it be I'm finally holding
What I've been hoping for
Could it be the end of just friends
The start of something more
Oh the way I'm feeling now
It's worth sticking around to see
Is this love
Or could it be

Is this love
Or could it be

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Charlie Worsham's "Could It Be," the singer admits to finally having what he's been hoping for, indicating that the moment he's in at the bar where he shares drinks and laughs with someone is his long-anticipated ideal. He woke up next to her "with a pounding heart, and achin' head, and no regrets." Although he acknowledges the potential risk of falling quickly and crashing in spectacular fashion, he's nevertheless overcome by the possibilities of this new, potentially romantic relationship. The chorus opens with wonder and possibility, wondering if he's finally holding what he has been hoping for, questioning whether he is crossing the blurred lines of friendship to love, and ending with an undetermined investigation into what this new, thrilling sensation could be. The singer even admits that he might wind up changing his partner's name, indicating that he's willing to take the title of serious romantic partner, even considering long-term implications of this newfound love.

In the second verse, he feels the need to keep hopes in check, citing the "rule number one," or the notion that friends don't break, and that they could chalk everything up to a sweet, though ill-fated mistake somewhere down the line. However, the longing in his heart eventually wins out, and he admits that he doesn't want to be alone tonight. He admits that time will tell if the partnership was worthwhile, but it's too late to back down now. The song concludes with the repeating of the chorus and the question "Is this love, or could it be?" indicating that the singer tosses up the idea of love being the final product of this romantic encounter, although he also allows for the possibility of illusion.

Had the immense pleasure of seeing Charlie perform live at CMC Rocks Qld (Australia) a couple of weeks ago both on the main stage and as part of an intimate acoustic songwriting performance (in the round) with 4 other songwriters.  Amazing talent, true gentleman and all round nice guy.  I was also lucky enough to meet him later and have a short chat.  He had no CDs in Australia available for sale but I came straight home and bought one on Amazon.  Incredible talent, guitarist, singer, performer and songwriter.  He's got it all!
