On May 14th 2010 Charlotte independently released an EP entitled "Sideways", which was digitally released online for free.
Before becoming a pop singer, Charlotte was involved in dance for 13 years until her early teens when she finished her involvement with the art due to pressures on being thin, "ditching her leotard for a guitar"; citing that she would much rather create her own art than portray that of someone else.
Although her name itself bears resemblance to The Cure's song of the same name, it is in actuality based on the 1969 children's novel of the same name written by Penelope Farmer, which portrays a young girl named Charlotte who exchanges places in time with another girl from 1918. The conceit of the story being they must find how to live each other's lives whilst remaining undiscovered in that time. The reason for Charlotte choosing the name aside from the book was that it represents the struggle with her self-perception and perception by others.

Losing Sleep
Charlotte Sometimes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't you, don't you dare lose
Be the humble girl you are
Don't cry in stranger's cars
La La goodnight
I'm awake and I've been losing sleep
I've been fighting all my demons
'Cause I've been trying, trying, trying
To be anything other than me
Be the star you know you are
Don't you, Don't you dare fail
You can own that balance beam
Two steps forward towards make believe
La La Goodnight
I'm awake and I've been losing sleep
I've been fighting all my demons
I've been getting weak
'Cause I've been trying, trying, trying
To be anything other than me
What a silly dream
Oh silly, silly me
To think I had a handle on this
When I know I know I lose
I know I know I Lose
We both know We both know
That I know I know I know I lose
We both now we both know that
In Charlotte Sometimes's song Losing Sleep, the lyrics encourage the listener to stay true to themselves and not to let the fear of failure or the desire to be someone else consume them. The first verse advises the listener to remember their strengths, remain humble, and not seek solace in the arms of strangers. The second verse focuses on the listener's potential and urges them not to give up, to trust their own abilities, and to take risks. The chorus reveals that the singer has been struggling with their own insecurities and self-doubt, trying so hard to be someone else that they have lost themselves.
The line "La La goodnight" that ends each verse adds a dreamlike quality to the song, suggesting that the lyrics are not only about reality but also about the inner world of the singer's thoughts and emotions. The bridge is a reflection on the singer's experience, acknowledging that they have been "fighting all [their] demons" but have still been unable to find the right path. The repeated line "I know I know I lose" is a candid recognition of their own faults and limitations, but also an admission that the listener will fail if they do not remain true to themselves.
Overall, the message of the song is one of self-love and confidence, urging the listener not to let their fears or doubts guide them. The dreamlike quality of the music adds to the sense of the lyrics being a journey through the singer's mind, and the repetition of the chorus emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself. The message of the song is ultimately a positive one, encouraging the listener to embrace their uniqueness and not give up on themselves.
