Oude Kerk
Cheap Mondays Lyrics

But what to say if you can't be mine
You're counting the minutes
Time has never been on my side
Too young and too pretty
Too much and i guess i ain't worth
You hide the pitty asking if i'd pay before
It's hard to leave and say
Grabbed in your glow
Wish to hold you tight than that
I won't let you know that's already time for a cigarette
The love is gone
The love is gone and it's ok
Here on my own
I remember the day you blew me away
It's hard to leave and say goodbye
It's hard to leave and say
The lyrics of "Oude Kerk" by Cheap Mondays express a sense of longing and regret. The singer is unable to express their feelings to the person they desire because they cannot be together. The singer describes the other person as "too young and too pretty" and feels that they are not worth the other person's time. The relationship seems to be coming to an end, as the singer states that "the love is gone" and they are "here on [their] own." Despite this, it is still difficult for the singer to say goodbye, as expressed in the repeated refrain "It's hard to leave and say goodbye."
The setting of the song is Oude Kerk, a historic church in Amsterdam. The specific significance of this location is not clear, but it could be interpreted as a symbol of the passage of time and the impermanence of relationships. The singer is aware of the fleeting nature of time, as they note that "time has never been on [their] side." This adds to the overall melancholic tone of the song.
