Cheap Trick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello there ladies and gentlemen
Hello there ladies and gents
Are you ready to rock
Are you ready or no

Hello there ladies and gentlemen
Hello there ladies and gents
Are you ready to rock
Are you ready or no

Would you like to do a number with me
Would you like to do a number with me
Would you like to do a number with me
Would you like to do a number with me

Hello there ladies and gentlemen
Hello there ladies and gents
Are you ready to rock
Are you ready or no

Would you like to do a number with me
Would you like to do a number with me
Would you like to

Would you like to
Well come on

Overall Meaning

At first glance, the lyrics to Cheap Trick's song "Hello There" appear to be a simple question about whether or not the audience is ready to rock. However, the repetition of the opening verse and chorus suggest that there is more to it than meets the eye. The lyrics seem to be an invitation to the audience to participate actively in the performance, with the repeated question "Would you like to do a number with me?" hinting at a desire to create a communal experience rather than simply putting on a show.

The repeated use of "hello" in the lyrics also has significance. It suggests that the band is eager to connect with the audience on a personal level, and that they view the performance as a way to build relationships rather than simply entertain. The emphasis on the phrase "ladies and gentlemen" reinforces this idea, as it evokes a formal, respectful tone that suggests the band is taking their role as performers seriously.

Overall, the lyrics to "Hello There" suggest that Cheap Trick is a band that values connection, community, and shared experiences, rather than simply putting on a performance for an audience.

It's interesting that it took a Japanese audience to launch Cheap Trick to superstardom. This live album was originally unavailable in the US and, much like The Clash's debut, was only released thanks to Epic having enough brains to respond to the import demand. Budokan is what catalyzed their meteoric rise. Without it, it's possible there would have been just as little attention paid to "Surrender" as had been to their great early singles that failed to chart. Thank you Japan!

Cyrus

Still one of the very best Live albums ever.
