One of the best known American power pop bands, the group's biggest hits over the years include "I Want You to Want Me", "Surrender", "Dream Police", "Don't Be Cruel" (a cover of Elvis Presley's hit), and "The Flame". Their most recent release, The Latest, has gained critical acclaim. They also wrote and performed the theme song for "The Colbert Report" as well as "That 70s Show", both tunes being fan favorites.
Nielsen and Petersson originally formed the group as Fuse in 1967, with Carlos joining the group several years later; however, when Zander joined as vocalist in 1972, the group was renamed Cheap Trick. Zander is considered one of the best hard rock vocalists of his era. For their part, Tom Petersson has been known for playing custom made 8, 12, and even a 18 string custom bass made by Modulus for Tom in 1981 and Rick Nielsen also has a penchant for unusual instruments. He owns and plays a five-necked solidbody electric guitar (it can be seen in the video for the song "She's Tight" among others).

The Rest of My Life
Cheap Trick Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like I know my own mind
And times I feel that I belong
It's no disguise, this love of mine
Who knows what forever is about
Be with you always in a day
Tomorrow never knows
And time waits for no one
If I could, I would
But I can't, so I won't love you forever
My, just the rest of my life
Will this ever pass or fade away?
Will this ever change or go astray?
Will I always be there where you are?
It's a mystery anyway
If I could, I would
But I can't, so I won't love you forever
My, just the rest of my life
If I could, I would
But I can't, so I won't love you forever
My, just the rest of my life
The rest of my life
The rest of my life
The rest of my life
The rest of my life
The rest of my life
The rest of my life
The lyrics of "The Rest Of My Life" by Cheap Trick explore the uncertainty and mystery of love and relationships. The singer admits that they don't always feel like they know their own mind, but they are certain of their love for someone. They wonder what forever really means and acknowledge that time waits for no one. Despite the unknowns, the singer expresses a commitment to be with their loved one for the rest of their life, even if they're not sure what that really means.
The song speaks to the common experience of not having everything figured out in love and relationships. The singer recognizes that there is no guarantee of forever and that they can only promise to love their partner for as long as they can. The repetition of "If I could, I would, but I can't, so I won't love you forever" emphasizes this idea of limitations and uncertainty.
Overall, the lyrics of "The Rest Of My Life" convey a sense of vulnerability and honesty. The singer acknowledges the mystery of love and relationships but still expresses their commitment to their partner. The song encourages the listener to embrace the unknowns of love and to appreciate the time they have with their loved ones.

Some days I just don't feel
Sometimes, I have days where I lack assurance
Like I know my own mind
Where I don't trust what I think
And times I feel that I belong
And then there are times when I'm sure I'm in the right place
It's no disguise, this love of mine
My love for you is honest and transparent
Who knows what forever is about
No one knows what forever truly means
Be with you always in a day
I'll love you every day I'm alive
Tomorrow never knows
The future is unpredictable
And time waits for no one
Time passes regardless of our desires
It's a mystery anyway
In the end, life is a mystery that we can't fully comprehend
If I could, I would
If I had the power, I would choose differently
But I can't, so I won't love you forever
But I can't guarantee forever, so I just promise the time I have left
My, just the rest of my life
That's all the time I can offer you, but it's all of me
Will this ever pass or fade away?
Will this love ever lose its power?
Will this ever change or go astray?
Will our love ever falter or break?
Will I always be there where you are?
Will I always be by your side?
The rest of my life
For the time I'm alive, this love will continue
