By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

Your Shirt
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Did I do somethin' wrong to make you go?
Said I would know when it's all good to fall
Now I just need you here to hold me close, oh
'Cause I don't want another heart to fill the holes
That you left under my covers for me to grow cold
I don't wanna miss somebody who's not missin' me
My room, where I want you
Tangled ease in my sheets
In your shirt that I got you
Half asleep, holdin' onto me
My bed where you left me
Tangled up, now it's noon
In your shirt that you gave me
Half asleep, wishin' I still had you
Half asleep, wishin' I still had you
This time you said you're playin' games again
What are we becomin' of it now?
It's fine, I said, if you're the one in my head
'Cause I just don't know how to put you out
'Cause I don't want another heart to fill the holes
That you left under my covers for me to grow cold
I don't wanna miss somebody who's not missin' me
But the city feels so lonely when you leave
My room, where I want you
Tangled ease in my sheets
In your shirt that I got you
Half asleep, holdin' onto me
My bed where you left me
Tangled up, now it's noon
In your shirt that you gave me
Half asleep, wishin' I still had you
I'm half asleep, wishin' I still had you
In Chelsea Cutler's song "Your Shirt," she sings about missing someone who has left her and longing for their presence. The lyrics hint at a past relationship that left her feeling empty and cold after they departed. She sings about not wanting to fill the void with someone else and not wanting to miss someone who doesn't miss her back. She longs for the feeling of being held by her former lover and reminisces about lying in bed with them in their shirt.
The song's lyrics show how it feels to miss someone you once loved deeply. The emptiness and loneliness that follows a breakup, where even the city streets feel deserted because the person you are missing is no longer around. The lyrics "I don't wanna miss somebody who's not missing me" portray the pain of loving someone who doesn't reciprocate those feelings.
The song speaks to the different aspects of a breakup, from the loneliness that comes with missing someone to the longing for familiarity and comfort, as evident in the lines, "tangled ease in my sheets" and "half asleep, holding onto me." The lyrics showcase how much one can miss a person they once had, feeling the weight of the loss on their bed, but still holding onto the memories that were made.
