Chelsea Joy Wolfe was born in Roseville, California, and grew up in Sacramento. She is of Norwegian and German descent. Her father was in a country band and owned a home studio. By the age of 7, she had written her first poem and by the age of 9, she had written and recorded songs which she later described as "basically Casio-based gothy R&B songs."
Inspired by the dark state of the world and the strange connection between all things, she creates a unique musical blend of goth-folk, experimental rock and spiritual realm funeral songs. With influences ranging from the great minds of Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch to Soviet and end-times literature, her songs conjure visions of other dimensions, claustrophobic echo-rooms and parking garage cathedrals.
Wolfe has recorded eight full length studio albums: The Grime and the Glow, which was released on December 28th, 2010 on limited vinyl through Brooklyn’s Pendu Sound Recordings; Ἀποκάλυψις (pronounced “Apokalypsis”), which was released as a 12” LP on August 23rd, 2011; Unknown Rooms: a Collection of Acoustic Songs, which was released on October, 2012 through Sargent House; Pain Is Beauty, out September 3rd, 2013; Abyss, which was released August 7th, 2015; and Hiss Spun, out September 22nd, 2017; Birth of Violence which was released on September 13th, 2019; She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She which was released on February 9th, 2024.

Sid your love is a pain
Said my love is an empire
Said get outta the way
Demons demons demons demons
Sid get outta the way
Said no one if i can't have her
Said no one - he's a fake
Sid get outta the way
Sid your love is a pain
Said my love is an empire
Sid get outta the way
Demons demons demons demons
"Demons" by Chelsea Wolfe is a dark and haunting song that explores the theme of the inner battle with our demons. In the song, Wolfe addresses her own inner demons and urges them to get out of the way, while also attacking the demons of some external character named Sid. The lyrics are short and repetitive, and the chorus of "Demons demons demons demons" reinforces the idea of a constant struggle with these inner forces.
Wolfe's use of the name Sid is interesting as it has been speculated to be a reference to Sid Vicious, the late Sex Pistols bassist known for his self-destructive behavior. This would add an additional layer to the song's theme of self-destruction and addiction. The lines "Said no one if I can't have her" and "He's a fake" indicate that Sid may be battling jealous tendencies towards someone he desires but cannot have, and that he is in some way insincere.
Overall, "Demons" is a song that starkly portrays the internal struggles that we all face on a daily basis. It is a reminder that while these demons may never truly be vanquished, we can at least try to keep them at bay.

I always wondered what music PJ Harvey would record if she died and returned as a zombie. Now I know.
Brilliant.

Saw them live a couple weeks ago with Liturgy. It was a really great performance. I had an epiphany of sadness when they were done, watching them pack up all the gear. I thought, "it really is over. I need more."
