Scrape
Chelsea Wolfe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were the summer
You were the coma
You were the only one

It was so quiet
And then you came around
And all the hiss of unknown
Turned lifeless and commonplace

You carrier, you′ll never see
What came undone, what you took from me
Can you hear them? Rats in the walls
They remind me together of who we were
I don't need your help or your hindrance
You stay the fuck away from me
You said: It′s been so long, I'm all alone
Hear the scratch of the rats in the walls

Led me here, said: Hold my hand
A young nymph defiled then
My body fights itself inside
I feel it bow, this mortal hold

You carrier, you repulse me
Heard the sound of her knees scrape against the street
You, the dirty one, what you took from me
There was nothing left but hypocrisy
Holy odium, blotted memory
But my regret will never consume me
The ocean's licking tongue, the letting of the blood
Vile prophecy, scrape it out of me

Overall Meaning

In Chelsea Wolfe's song "Scrape," the lyrics explore themes of betrayal, loss, and the destructive power of a toxic relationship. The song opens with the lines "You were the summer, You were the coma, You were the only one," implying that the subject of the song was once a significant presence in the singer's life, bringing both warmth and a sense of detachment or numbness.

The following lines, "It was so quiet, And then you came around, And all the hiss of unknown, Turned lifeless and commonplace," suggest that the introduction of this person disrupted the singer's peaceful existence, replacing it with something mundane and devoid of mystery. The lyrics continue with a sense of resentment, referring to the person as a "carrier," someone who symbolizes disease or contamination. The mention of rats in the walls serves as a metaphor for the haunting presence of their past relationship and the memories it conjures.

The second verse delves deeper into the destructive nature of the relationship, with lyrics such as "Led me here, said: Hold my hand, A young nymph defiled then," indicating a manipulation or exploitation of the singer's vulnerability. The references to her body fighting against itself and feeling a mortal hold imply a struggle to reclaim her own identity and autonomy.

The chorus repeats the accusation of being a carrier and highlights the repulsion the singer feels towards this person. The mention of scrapes and knees scraping against the street further emphasizes the physical pain and degradation inflicted upon her. The final lines express a determination to overcome the negative impact of the relationship, stating that regret will not consume her, but rather, she will scrape it out of herself, symbolizing a cathartic release.

Overall, "Scrape" delves into the complexities of a destructive relationship, exploring the emotional and physical torment experienced by the singer. It portrays the struggle to break free from the influence of the toxic individual while acknowledging the lingering scars and memories left behind.

She is my favorite artist at the moment, and I've read she is very reserved with the media....I just feel like every thing is in her music and that is a beautiful thing. Some of them have complained about her not wanting to talk about things, it's like they are clueless about what a deep artist she is. She expresses in her music, singing, guitar, that's who she is.

It shows that "Scrape" feels incredibly close to her heart. It's her favourite song from Hisspun and for a reason. She always does it phenomenal justice when she performs it live, gives all of her soul to it. This is terrific, just as always, Chelsea. Happy birthday to our queen <3

I think this woman kinda fills an empty space in the musical scene. And does it extremely well.
