Chelsea Joy Wolfe was born in Roseville, California, and grew up in Sacramento. She is of Norwegian and German descent. Her father was in a country band and owned a home studio. By the age of 7, she had written her first poem and by the age of 9, she had written and recorded songs which she later described as "basically Casio-based gothy R&B songs."
Inspired by the dark state of the world and the strange connection between all things, she creates a unique musical blend of goth-folk, experimental rock and spiritual realm funeral songs. With influences ranging from the great minds of Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch to Soviet and end-times literature, her songs conjure visions of other dimensions, claustrophobic echo-rooms and parking garage cathedrals.
Wolfe has recorded seven full length studio albums: The Grime and the Glow, which was released on December 28th, 2010 on limited vinyl through Brooklyn’s Pendu Sound Recordings; Ἀποκάλυψις (pronounced “Apokalypsis”), which was released as a 12” LP on August 23rd, 2011; Unknown Rooms: a Collection of Acoustic Songs, which was released on October, 2012 through Sargent House; Pain Is Beauty, out September 3rd, 2013; Abyss, which was released August 7th, 2015; and Hiss Spun, out September 22nd, 2017; Birth of Violence[7i] which was released on September 13th, 2019.
We Hit a Wall
Chelsea Wolfe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That we put on
If you didn't know
Had control
It would mean some
But we put on
If we didn't know
It was so cold
Have you seen the wall?
Have you seen the wall?
Have you seen the wall?
Have you seen the wall?
We hit a wall
That we put on
If you didn't know
Had control
It would be tall never tall
Said we pout a wall
Kiss me slow
Not deep
Soon had loved
Soon had love
Soon had love
And in this love
Have you seen the wall?
Have you seen the wall?
Have you seen the wall?
Have you seen the wall?
Chelsea Wolfe's song We Hit a Wall presents an introspective look at the barriers that humans impose on themselves in personal relationships. The opening line "We hit a wall that we put on" suggests that the obstacles that are hindering the relationship are not external but rather, ones that they have created themselves. The repeated refrain "If you didn't know had control, it would mean some, but we put on" demonstrates the paradoxical nature of the problem. The lyrics suggest that they are in control of the situation, yet they are the ones who have placed a barrier in their own path. The line "If we didn't know, it was so cold, it would never work" could be interpreted as a metaphor for the impossibility of love to flourish in an environment that is emotionally cold.
The plea "Have you seen the wall?" is repeated throughout the song, signifying the desperation that comes with trying to overcome this obstacle. The wall represents the feeling of being trapped, unable to move forward in the relationship. The repetition of the line "Soon had love" towards the end of the song suggests that they both wanted to feel love and be close to each other, yet they were unable to achieve this. The final lines of the song "And in this love" could be interpreted as the realization that their love for each other may not be enough to overcome the barrier they have created.

WE HIT A WALL
WE HIT A WALL WHEN WE WERE YOUNG
WE’D GIVEN UP
WE WERE NEVER TAUGHT
WHEN WE WERE YOUNG WE DID IGNORE
IT WAS SO COLD
WE WERE NEVER WARNED
WE NEVER WERE
HOW IS IT THE WORLD
HOW IS IT THE ONE
HOW IS THIS THE WORLD
HOW IS THIS THE ONE
WE HIT A WALL WHEN WE WERE ALONE
WE DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO CONTROL
NO ONE EVER TOLD
I SHOWED YOU HOW TO HOLD MY HAND
AND KISS ME SLOW AND UNENDING
I’LL SHOW YOU HOW TO LOVE
(AN ENDLESS WAR)
HOW IS THIS THE WORLD
HOW IS THIS THE ONE
HOW IS THIS THE WORLD
HOW IS THIS THE ONE
