Chelsea Joy Wolfe was born in Roseville, California, and grew up in Sacramento. She is of Norwegian and German descent. Her father was in a country band and owned a home studio. By the age of 7, she had written her first poem and by the age of 9, she had written and recorded songs which she later described as "basically Casio-based gothy R&B songs."
Inspired by the dark state of the world and the strange connection between all things, she creates a unique musical blend of goth-folk, experimental rock and spiritual realm funeral songs. With influences ranging from the great minds of Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch to Soviet and end-times literature, her songs conjure visions of other dimensions, claustrophobic echo-rooms and parking garage cathedrals.
Wolfe has recorded seven full length studio albums: The Grime and the Glow, which was released on December 28th, 2010 on limited vinyl through Brooklyn’s Pendu Sound Recordings; Ἀποκάλυψις (pronounced “Apokalypsis”), which was released as a 12” LP on August 23rd, 2011; Unknown Rooms: a Collection of Acoustic Songs, which was released on October, 2012 through Sargent House; Pain Is Beauty, out September 3rd, 2013; Abyss, which was released August 7th, 2015; and Hiss Spun, out September 22nd, 2017; Birth of Violence[7i] which was released on September 13th, 2019.
You Are My Sunshine
Chelsea Wolfe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
Dreamt I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and cried
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
Chelsea Wolfe's version of "You Are My Sunshine" is a haunting reimagining of a classic song that is often associated with sunshine and happiness. However, Wolfe strips away the cheerful tone of the original and instead presents a melancholic and sorrowful take on the lyrics. The repeated line "Please don't take my sunshine away" takes on a new meaning as Wolfe seems to be pleading with a lover to not leave her, and to not take away the little bit of light and happiness that they bring to her life.
The second verse of the song adds to the sense of loss and yearning, as Wolfe sings about a dream where she held her lover in her arms, only to wake up and realize that it was not real. This adds a surreal and almost nightmarish quality to the song, as the dream world and reality collide in a painful way. Wolfe's vocals are haunting and ethereal, paired with a slow and mournful acoustic guitar that builds to a soaring crescendo.
Overall, Wolfe's version of "You Are My Sunshine" is a powerful reimagining of a classic song, using the lyrics to convey a sense of loss, longing, and the pain of a relationship on the brink of falling apart.

“I dragged myself, and I dragged myself through five nights with no stars. I dug myself the deepest place that I could find. But still the days they past like years, and the years they past seconds, I’ve never felt so dead inside. I’ve never felt so alive, I’ve never felt so dead inside. I’ve never felt so alive”
