Shut Up And Drive
Chely Wright Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shut up and drive, you don't know what you're talking about
He's not the one, you ought to know that by now
You've got one of those hearts, that keeps changing your mind
Your heart has a way of making you stay so shut up and drive

Don't look in the mirror, he might have that look in his eyes
The one that's so strong it strangles your will to survive
He's mastered the art of looking sincere
His eyes have a way of making you stay don't look in the mirror

I'm the voice you never listen to
And I had to break your heart to make you see
That he's the one who will be missing you
And you'll only miss the man
That you wanted him to be

Turn the radio on to drown out the sound of goodbye
Blink back the tears show me you've still got your pride
Just get yourself lost in a sad country song
Those guys that they play know just what to say turn the radio on

I'm the voice you never listen to
And I had to break your heart to make you see
That he's the one who will be missing you
And you'll only miss the man
That you wanted him to be

Shut up and drive
Don't look in the mirror
Turn the radio on
Get out of here
Shut up and drive

Overall Meaning

In Chely Wright's song "Shut Up And Drive," the lyrics tell a story about a woman who is being advised to move on from the man she loves. The song starts with the line, "Shut up and drive, you don't know what you're talking about," indicating that someone is telling the woman to stop talking about her relationship problems and just move past them. The repetition of "shut up and drive" throughout the song reinforces this message of urging the woman to let go of her feelings and simply move on.

The chorus of the song continues this message, with lyrics that suggest the woman's heart is causing her to stay in a bad relationship. It advises her not to look in the mirror because she might see the love in her partner's eyes and be unable to leave. Instead, she should turn the radio on and listen to sad country songs to help her get over the heartbreak.

The bridge of the song introduces the singer, who is revealed to be the one giving this advice. It suggests that the person giving the advice had to break the woman's heart to help her see that the man she loves isn't right for her. The song ends with a final repetition of "shut up and drive."

Overall, "Shut Up And Drive" provides a powerful message about letting go of toxic relationships and moving on from heartbreak. The lyrics emphasize the importance of listening to others' advice and learning to trust oneself.

I love the line, "you'll only miss the man that you wanted him to be". How true this often is.

After a miserable 13 years married to an alcoholic, I was even more miserable for a while after he left. It was that one line that really put things into perspective so I could start to heal. I didn't miss the life we had, I only missed the life I thought we could have had.

We should NOT judge people by who they love....rather, judge them by what they do in this world! Chely Wright is a beautiful, talented country singer. She was before she came out, she is now. Nothing about her music has changed. This video is the same now as it was when I saw it ten years ago. Chely, just keep on giving us great country music, and we'll keep loving you for it!
