I am sorry you had a bad experience donating plasma... Don't let it ruin the rest of your life and cause untoward fear towards normal blood work. Mistakes happen, and we can only choose how we react to them.

I have very bad anxiety myself and had a bad experience donating double reds a few years back. I finished the donation, vomited in the bathroom at the clinic and felt like passing out. My arm hurt like a mofo for days with moderate bruising.

A large part of that was because I hadn't really eaten properly or had enough to drink the day before. Ech.

Still, I have to get bloodwork done every 6 months for genetic disease testing (hypothyroidism). I was afraid of the bloodwork, but pushed through it. The more normal experiences I had, the more the fear went away.

I donate plasma today. I'm not saying to go this route (I understand one way of coping is just not doing the thing), but don't let it get in the way of routine bloodwork.

@Celia Robles There are much better ways of informing someone of the “risk” then fear mongering. Plasma does last for one year, but that has little to do with availability inventory on any given day.

Plasma centers have medical staff on site. She admitted to “being held for 20 minutes” which indicates they observed her.

They are paying for donations, what neighborhoods do you think they will have the most success in?

I hope you never need a transfusion, because those vultures are going to save your life…

I’ve personally had to speak with hospital staff after someone died because they didn’t have to blood for a transfusion. It happens every day.

My wife and I donated for about 5 months when we were in a bind and never had any serious issues. Everyone reacts differently. I could donate and then have a rigorous workout after and functiin fine. My wife on the other hand would be exhausted for the rest of the day.

I’ve donated plasma in the past with my right arm. Today I donated with my left and strangely I got extremely nauseous and my eyes started tearing up though I didn’t realize it. I normally get cold but I wasn’t cold at all throughout the donation today. When I finished, I was told I could stay or leave but they didn’t offer me any water or snack so I just left. Luckily, my boyfriend was my ride, and we drove off. Within a couple minutes, my nausea got worse and I puked all over is car, more like than when I’m hung over. We tried calling the clinic but they hung up on us. I don’t think I’ll be donating anymore as well, it can be scary out of no where even with proper precautions. I’m shocked my blood pressure didn’t show any red flags

Why did you switch arms? It’s best not to switch because you can build up scar tissue in each arm between donation. I’ve been using my right arm for three years of donating twice a week. Easiest side hustle ever…oh yeah and it helps people. I’d say give it another try with your good vein. There could be a bunch of factors with What happened

I do have to admit that calling into any location is a mess. The people that answer the phones are usually very rude. They never know how to answer any questions, or they don’t try. They let you know with their body language and their voice how annoyed they are. The debit card is always an issue at my location. I have had more money disappear from my card than I care to know. You can’t overdraw with the card so this makes zero sense. I have never used my card for online purchases or reoccurring purchases. Calling their bank is even less pleasant than calling the location you donate at. They are horrible.

I started donating a month ago. I've been donating 5 times now. Haven't had no problems. Eat healthy stay hydrated two hours before donating and eat healthy again. Drink lots of fluids the night before and get rest. They always check your vitals, temp and iron. They always look at your arms elbows and hands..You answer questions every time you check in. Are you feeling healthy today etc. I'm tired after donating but it helps with my anxiety. I get really hungry after donating. It messes with my emotions and mood but for just a day or two.. kinda weird, but everyone's different. One donation I was told can help three people lives 👍
Update: I've been donating two half months now. Using the money for summer vacca. I definitely drink a lot of fluids the day before and eat healthy. Don't just eat one meal eat small meals after. Eat two hours before donating. I drink juice, coconut water and a big bottle of smart water two hours before. I take some water and snack with me for after Donating..If you're not hydrated well, it can cause headaches also being sick to your stomach, sweating, tingling. Not a good idea to drink coffee or soda the day of. Definitely don't drink alcohol the day of or if you're hung over. Not a good idea. After the first of May I'm taking a break from donating for a few months.

@Finished Yes, you are compensated. Every donation place is different on how much you can make per donation. I was able to make $500 within the first month as a first time donor. I donated twice a week but you do need to be hydrated, get a good nt rest and eat well before and after. Best time to go is morning or late afternoon and plan on being there for three hours per registration and seeing a nurse before your first time donating. You'll always have your temp, blood pressure and your finger pricked before you donate checking your iron etc. If your numbers are to low you can't donate and they'll send a sample of your blood to check for diseases.
I was super nervous the first time and left. Got my nerve up the second time and it was fine.

i only donated once and i passed out. the staff did something wrong and there was blood dripping down my arm. it was very scary and i won’t be donating plasm again. i never had problems with needles but now i’m scared to give blood. all they did was give me a sugar drink and check my heart. i’ve heard that a lot of phlebotomists in plasma centers aren’t certified and don’t have any experience. someone i know that works at one said he never practiced before they let him start working on a patient…

I will have to side with her on one issue if she actually did pass out they should've at least had her lay down for a certain amount of time and give her plenty of fluids and something to eat. At the grifols plasma center here in Indiana that is part of the protocol if they are unable to return the blood back into your body you have to stay seated drink a full bottle of Gatorade and eat something that they give you before you can leave.

There is no siding with her on this. You are well explained at every plasma donation center the dangers and risk of donations however few they are. She was conscious and probably was laying down for 20 minutes. If she said she felt fine and left then that's on her. You can't trust her becaus she's just looking for easy money. Everyone knows you might possibly pass out during a donation. It's common knowledge. If she didn't have the mindset to bring someone with her who can drive her there and back that's on her.

The likely reason they didn’t want you to drink anything is because it can lower your body temperature reading, meaning a person can mask a fever (99.5°F or higher). Most new donors won’t know these kinds of tricks that people do to get around the parameters to ensure they donate, and ultimately get paid. The attendant shouldn’t have overreacted, especially knowing it was your first time.

So I am a BioLife client and they stated I had a seizure in there facility. The called an ambulance and sent me to the hospital. The machine I was on malfunctioned while I was at the end of the donation, (it turned completely off and they couldn't get it to turn back on!) I'm not over weight but not underweight either. Ended up in hospital and told me I just had a fainting spell and sent me home after fluids were administered. Now they are telling me because of the hospital not stating that I had a seizure I can no longer donate anymore. It's wrong!!

since after 4 months ...I donated plasma i notice i had frequent chest pain and dizziness during the donation and when was the last cycles my chest started to feel if i rub VICKS on it and I felt so cold feeling... until a point that just couldn't even go to work ...i even change jobs and started as a CSR and still the dizziness was more frequent and that's when I went to the Emergency room ,, the short breaths was getting worse .... I couldn't even walk less then 10 feet away .... in hospital did exams says I was healthy as horse but i notice my iron kept doing down and donating had a major effect for the rest of my life now... now I can't even do activates like a normal person without feeling dizziness nausea, short breath, chest pain and tiredness ..even to pick something from the floor I feel like drunkenness :(

Did she read what they told her to read? Did she get water like they told her to? I assume she gave 660 ml of plasma, which contains about 20 oz of water. Even with a routine donation, you need to replace that water.

The clot could have been a future problem, so be happy that was found.

Agree, I have donated off and on since 1995 but in the past 3 months have donated twice a week every week, you must stay hydrated and consume protein and a multivitamin with iron is a necessity when I donate, but have never had severe adverse reactions.

I had something just like this happen to me today donating in st Clair shores Michigan i was getting hot and started sweating and almost passed out they gave me ice packs and two small Gatorades and waited told me they would walk me to the door when i felt ready and they did.i don't have any bruising showing like she did. I’m an avid donor. Her issues have nothing to do with her donation. If she didn’t feel well she should have waited there. You sign or agree at the kiosk, at vitals and with the donor techs. It’s is all there in the small print that you agreed to. I promise they’ve protected themselves as a company. She doesn’t look like a healthy person, she doesn’t sound like a smart person. I donated today. I have the biggest veins every and visible. Well the new staff member stuck me and cause hematoma on first arm. Restuck me on other arm. I got my full donation In but another hematoma on other arm. He said it was his fault over and over. Yet , the nurse took me back to her office and said “you have to let people fail sometimes and I wasn’t there.” 😅😂those contracts cover their butts . Be weary . I’m a dietitian and I know how to eat right to help recover. It made $900 when I needed it as a new donor . Just my advice, if a new kid misses the first arm, ask if another employee can stick your other arm

In any procedure that lowers blood supply, it is normal for blood pressure to go down. For some people, it may go down enough to cause nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, fainting, etc. Ask and dialysis patient and they will tell you all about this. This patient’s arm looks like she may have been a hard stick which causes bruising, sometimes substantial. As a nurse who works with patients who are on dialysis (extremely similar in the ways that count here), what is described by the patient directly are expected potential adverse effects that, when they quickly reverse & patient’s blood pressure rebounds, are not 911-worthy. They are that normal and that quickly reversible. That’s not to say she didn’t genuinely go through something and yes, the staff fell short here by not educating her up front on what highly possible adverse things can happen when you pull that much blood out. If I were to give a strong guess here, she came in more dehydrated than the donation center realized. These things happen, unfortunately. And she probably signed consents that descibed these situations clearly. A nurse should have also explained it in detail so the patient could go into it knowing bruising is likely (also, if she was dehydrated coming in, this explains why she would be a “hard stick” as her veins would be tiny), and the patient would know what symptoms of hypotension to report to prevent passing out.

I have just started donating and they require you to answer a ton of questions about your health, give you a physical, check your vitals etc.. THey always are telling you to drink LOTS OF WATER Before and after.. to eat specif thing. That is at CSL plasma... either OCTA is sloppy but CSL is pretty specific and you go through consent after consent after consent.. It does no good to lie about your health. Sure, it may mean you can't make money donating but it's your health

shit wouldnt happen if you eat properly i wanna start donating for some extra cash dont eat fast food or junk food before u go eat a nice breakfast and lunch i would say drink nothing but water from what ive been told everyonei know who has done it said they have no issues if you prepare yourself right before you donate you really gotta eat and drink alot of water because they draw a lot of blood just some recommendations to have a good first donation it should be smooth and typically easy its on her for probably not eating properly and drinking enough water before she went but they should be looking over just in case u pass out or something does go wrong i agree with that part but maybe next im gonna bet she should probably eat better and get the water. i drink nothing but water pretty all day outside of my tea and lemonade mix im gonna be golden when i donate because i stopped drinking soda completely like 5 months ago shit dont help at all

At some point you have to stop donating . You develop scars on the inside of your forearms from the needle . The scars never go away. I had to stop because I didn't want to increase the scars. No more donating for me... ever.

Yup, they lessen over time but will always be there. Luckily they are more visible to you than others. But yeah, not something you want to do on a long term/permanent basis. Just sad so many have to resort to this to get extra money for food, groceries, gas, etc.

If you use cocoa butter with vitamin e or just vitamin e oil it brings the scars down that's what I use also if you take 6months or longer breaks you can go back to donate because the thick scar will be gone I have done that so I know

The questions and the vitals can feel a bit invasive at first. But remember if they get a batch of plasma from you that is useless for their needs they literally throw it away and have wasted resources processing that one batch. And….you are getting paid. Just an fyi for people thinking of donating, while plasma saves lives, they have synthetic plasma aka Albumin that they give people. When I got a plasma transplant through dialysis for an autoimmune disorder and stem cell transplant they did give me all synthetic plasma. Which, for certain conditions is necessary bc as a human inflammation is stored in our plasma. So inflammation from poor diet, enviornmental factors, etc it’s all there and inflammation is very bad you try to remove inflammation by transplanting brand new inflammation free plasma. But, for other conditions it’s perfectly fine to use donor plasma. They aren’t as dire off for plasma as they would like you to think. Don’t risk your life for a quick buck. Those who reallllly need plasma will get it whether it comes from you or is lab made by science.

I think my phlebotomist drove the needle too deep, thru the Vein entirely and into my bicep. It pumped for maybe 5 minutes before they rearranged it but now my bicep seems to have shrunk in size and its very very sore. I can't find any useful info online about what would happen if blood is pumped out of a muscle. Any help?

Matthew McWane they mess up a lot and they never take responsibility if anything goes wrong they will blame you I got deferred today for 2 months after they messed up on my first stick I drew fine and couldn’t return at all then after trying to re stick me in my other arm to give me my blood back after I told them I couldn’t use that arm they looked for a vein for over 10 minutes could not fine one multiple people had to come check ! After all that she still stuck me !! They told me if I didn’t allow a re stick I would get another strike and ultimately end up deferred so basically after she stuck me the 2nd time in my other arm when she didn’t find a vein what do you know she missed so they couldn’t give me my blood back and now I’m not able to donate for 2 months bc I need time to regenerate the blood cells I lost . I talked to the staff and management I asked them if their employees are trained to stick people when they never even found a vein and she tried to reword it to where she was saying no but she was still making an excuse for them basically trying to tell me I’m lying saying that they wouldn’t stick me if they couldn’t find anything these places are truly fucking ridiculous they treat donors like shit I’ve donated for years and I rarely have complications but the few times that I’ve had complications because of how they don’t know how to stick me They take no responsibility I drink plenty of water I’m healthy my veins are never hard to find there was really no excuse so overall I would not trust these places because the employees are not thoroughly trained if they don’t have prior experience which most of them don’t ( this was at a CSL Plasma )

Blood donations are compensated in ways not easily transferred to cash per FDA guidance. This is because money encourages people who may have health issues (ie diseases that can transfer thru blood) to donate.

Plasma does not has this limitation as it is mostly broken down and processed in a way that kills most viruses. Much lower risk, so the FDA doesn't care about cash compensation. You can't just boil whole blood and have it be useful. Plasma, that's essentially what happens.

Most folks encounter few, if any problems. The woman in the video may very well have not hydrated herself sufficiently before the donation or failed to eat a sufficient meal beforehand. Those mistakes are on her.
