Cher gained popularity in 1965 as one-half of the folk rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher after their song "I Got You Babe" peaked at number one on the US and UK charts. Together they sold 40 million records worldwide. Her solo career was established during the same time, with the top-ten singles "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" and "You Better Sit Down Kids". She became a television personality in the 1970s with her CBS shows; first The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, watched by over 30 million viewers weekly during its three-year run, and then the namesake Cher. She emerged as a fashion trendsetter by wearing elaborate outfits on her television shows.
While working on television, Cher released the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed", and "Dark Lady", becoming the female artist with the most number-one singles in United States history at the time. After her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, she released the disco album Take Me Home (1979) and earned $300,000 a week for her 1979–1982 concert residency in Las Vegas.
In 1982, Cher made her Broadway debut in the play Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and starred in its film adaptation. She subsequently garnered critical acclaim for her performances in films such as Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), and Moonstruck (1987), the last of which won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She then revived her music career by recording the rock-inflected albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989), and Love Hurts (1991), all of which yielded successful singles such as "I Found Someone", "If I Could Turn Back Time", and "Love and Understanding". Cher contributed to the soundtrack for her next film, Mermaids (1990), which spawned the UK number-one single "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". She made her directorial debut with a segment in the abortion-themed anthology If These Walls Could Talk (1996).
Cher reached a new commercial peak in 1998 with the dance-pop album Believe, whose title track topped the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1999 and became the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK. It features pioneering use of Auto-Tune to distort her vocals, known as the "Cher effect". Her 2002–2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour became one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time, earning $250 million. In 2008, she signed a $60 million deal to headline the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for three years. During the 2010s, she landed starring roles in the films Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) and released studio albums Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200.
Having sold 100 million records, Cher is one of the world's best-selling music artists. Her achievements include a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, the Billboard Icon Award, and awards from the Kennedy Center Honors and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. She is the only artist to date to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart in six consecutive decades, from the 1960s to the 2010s. Aside from music and acting, she is noted for her political views, social media presence, philanthropic endeavors, and social activism, including LGBT rights and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Cher Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I heard your note today
You talk about injustice
And how we look the other way
I knew full well your meaning
But my world just moves too fast
It's a shame about your future
It's a crime about your past
Was there no one who could save you
From the prison of each breath
Like Rapunzel in her tower
Isolation equals death
Was there no one who could rescue you
From the prison of your pain
Am I tougher or just lucky
Our fate didn't end the same
But my heart has run on empty
Since I heard the fuckin' news
We're a heartless, Godless culture
We'd walk nowhere in your shoes
For me it's 6:30 in the morning
And my moods as black as rain
I am 30 light years older
But I understand your pain
They'll all hate you
'Cause you left them here
To struggle on their own
I'm sorry you saw no choice
'Til death chilled you to the bone
But my heart has run on empty
Since I heard the fuckin' news
We're a heartless, Godless culture
We'd walk nowhere in your shoes
Well the good news if there's any
Is you ever lived at all
But our country kills its heroes
We just raise them for the fall
In Cher's song "The Fall," the lyrics explore themes of injustice, isolation, pain, and death. The song is about someone the singer never knew but who left a note talking about these issues. The lyrics convey a sense of guilt about not being able to do anything to help, feeling as if the world is moving too fast to truly recognize the struggles of others. The lines "For me it's 6:30 in the morning and my mood's as black as rain, I am 30 light years older, but I understand your pain," emphasize a sense of empathy while also indicating a feeling of resignation, as if the singer doesn't believe anything can be done to change the status quo.
The lyrics also criticize our culture as heartless and godless, and suggest that, as a society, we don't do enough to recognize or help those in need. The verse "But our country kills its heroes, we just raise them for the fall," is particularly effective in conveying this sense of futility - even those we might see as heroic, or who might inspire us, are ultimately doomed to suffer and fall without us being able to do anything to truly save them. The metaphor of Rapunzel in her tower is also interesting - on one level, it highlights the idea of isolation leading to death, but it also suggests that any efforts to rescue someone might ultimately result in their downfall.
Overall, "The Fall" is a powerful song that explores complex themes in a thoughtful and nuanced way. It encourages listeners to think about the ways in which we might be able to help others, but also acknowledges the limitations of human action in the face of systemic injustice and suffering.

Never even knew you
I never met you, but today I heard about you through a note
But I heard your note today
I learned about you and your message through a note
You talk about injustice
Your message was about the unfairness and injustice in the world
And how we look the other way
But we tend to ignore or turn a blind eye to it
I knew full well your meaning
I understood the message you were trying to convey
But my world just moves too fast
However, my life and environment are very busy and fast-paced
It's a shame about your future
It's sad and unfortunate what could have been for you in the future
It's a crime about your past
And it's tragic what happened to you in the past
Was there no one who could save you
I can't help but wonder if there was anyone who could have prevented your situation
From the prison of each breath
You seemed trapped in every breath you took
Like Rapunzel in her tower
Just like the story of Rapunzel who was trapped in her tower
Isolation equals death
Being isolated from the world can lead to a feeling of hopelessness and despair
Was there no one who could rescue you
I can't help but wonder if there was anyone who could have saved you from your pain and isolation
From the prison of your pain
It seems like you were imprisoned by your own pain and suffering
Am I tougher or just lucky
I can't help but question if I'm more resilient or just fortunate to not be in your situation
Our fate didn't end the same
Our lives and destinies turned out differently
But my heart has run on empty
I feel completely devastated and helpless after hearing the news of your situation
Since I heard the fuckin' news
Ever since I learned about what happened to you
We're a heartless, Godless culture
Our society seems to lack compassion and empathy, and maybe even faith
We'd walk nowhere in your shoes
We couldn't begin to understand what it was like to be in your situation
For me it's 6:30 in the morning
Currently, it is early in the morning for me
And my moods as black as rain
But my mood is very somber and bleak
I am 30 light years older
I may be much older than you, or at least feel that way emotionally
But I understand your pain
But I can empathize and sympathize with the pain you must have felt
They'll all hate you
Sadly, some may even have negative feelings towards you for your actions
'Cause you left them here
Because you are no longer here
To struggle on their own
And they have to face their own challenges without you
I'm sorry you saw no choice
I deeply regret that you felt like you had no other option
'Til death chilled you to the bone
Until you ultimately passed away and were consumed by the coldness of death
Well the good news if there's any
If there is any positive aspect to this situation
Is you ever lived at all
It's that you had a life, and you existed in this world
But our country kills its heroes
It seems that in our society, we tend to let down even our most important and valued individuals
We just raise them for the fall
We may even set up our heroes for their eventual downfall instead of celebrating their contributions and accomplishments

A queda de blues de Kurt cobain
Cher
…
Não havia ninguém que pudesse te salvar?
Da prisão de cada respiração
Como Rapunzel na torre dela
Isolamento é igual a morte
Não havia ninguém que pudesse te salvar?
Da prisão da sua dor
Eu sou mais forte ou apenas sortudo?
Nosso destino não terminou o mesmo
…
Mas meu coração correu vazio
Desde que ouvi a porra da notícia
Somos uma cultura sem coração e sem Deus
Nós não andávamos em lugar algum em seus sapatos
…
Para mim é 6:30 da manhã
E meu humor tão negro quanto a chuva
Eu tenho 30 anos-luz mais velhos
Mas eu entendo sua dor
Todos odeiam você
Porque você os deixou aqui
Para lutar por conta própria
Me desculpe você não viu escolha
Até a morte te esfriar até o osso
…
Mas meu coração correu vazio
Desde que ouvi a porra da notícia
Somos uma cultura sem coração e sem Deus
Nós não andávamos em lugar algum em seus sapatos
…
Bem, a boa notícia se houver alguma
Você já viveu alguma vez?
Mas nosso país mata seus heróis
Nós apenas os criamos para a queda
Alissa
