Fit to Fly
Cher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, brother, man where are you?
I am bucklin' from the load.
I have lost my eye for color
And my heart can't see the road.
Oh, sister, come and catch me
Cause my legs, their prime has past.
I am breaking from the sorrow
And my faith is fadin' fast.
Mother, father, help me
I'm your flesh and blood and bone.
Don't you hear me?
Can't you see me?
Am I doomed to live alone?
Without warmth, or love, or honor
Like a dog out on the street,
Am I trash 'cause I can't manage
Must I grovel at your feet?

I'm the boy who fought your battles
And I'm the man who won your wars.
Is it over?
Have you used me?
I'm no value anymore?

I'm your mothers,
Wives, and daughters
I'm your fathers, husbands, sons,
I'm the life's blood of this country
I'm the hopeful precious ones.

Am I nothing,
Am I no one?
Once a fabric,
Now a rag.
We treat people like they're nothing
We're not fit to fly,
Fit to fly
No, no, no, no, no, no.

We're not fit to fly,
Fit to fly a flag (no, no, no)
Join the Army,
See the world
The Marine Corps,
Join the Navy

We're not fit to fly
Fit to fly the flag.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cher's song 'Fit to Fly' speak to the struggles and feelings of isolation faced by individuals who have sacrificed so much for their country, only to feel discarded and forgotten. The opening lines show the singer's desperation for connection and support from those closest to them, but they feel alone and lost. The metaphor of losing their 'eye for color' and their heart's inability to see the road suggests a loss of hope and direction in life. The next verse addresses the singer's physical limitations and the toll that fighting for their country has taken on their body and mind. They feel broken and hopeless, and their faith is slipping away.

The following lines suggest a plea for help and recognition of their worth as a human being, not just a soldier. They feel disregarded and undervalued, as though they are just another piece of discarded trash. The mention of being a boy who fought their battles and a man who won their wars, suggests that the singer has given everything they had to their country, yet they don't feel valued. The chorus speaks to the lack of value and recognition for the sacrifices that soldiers make for their country. The repeated line 'we're not fit to fly the flag' suggests that until we recognize and honor those who have given everything for their country, we are not deserving of the symbol that represents it.

I totally agree with you, she should do more, dark stuff, as the record companies called it, I think it's a brilliant album, one of her best if not her best, my favorites are Still, With or Without You and The Fall (Kurt's Blues) I love this entire recording except the very last song.
