Walking in Memphis
Cher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

W. C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a girl can be

[Chorus]
Then I'm walking in Memphis
I was Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis But do I really feel the way I feel

Saw the ghost of Elvis On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered around his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing Waiting for the King
Down in the Jungle Room

[Chorus]

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer boy you're got a prayer in Memphis
Now Gabriel plays piano Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see him
And they asked me if I would,
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might, he said,
Tell me are you a Christian child?
And I said That I am tonight

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Walking in Memphis" by Cher is a nostalgic ballad written by Marc Cohn in 1991, which speaks about different cultural and musical landmarks that the singer experiences during her visit to Memphis, Tennessee. The lyrics mention some of the most significant places and figures that make Memphis an iconic and vibrant city for music lovers. The song is a mix of pop, blues, and gospel, which was well-received by audiences all over the world, and it became one of Cher's biggest hits.

In the first verse, the singer describes his arrival in Memphis, wearing his blue suede shoes, a nod to the famous Elvis Presley song. He acknowledges the city's history, as a mecca for Delta Blues music, and how the pouring rain has only added to the romanticism of it all. The song references W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, and his wish for his protection as he embarks on his visit.

The chorus invokes a dreamy quality that exemplifies the surreal quality Cher feels on this visit. She can't believe that she is walking on the famous Beale Street, a famous destination for live music and entertainment. She articulates the strong impression these places left on her, and how she's unsure if she can trust her enthusiasm or is just getting caught up in the magic of it all.

In the second verse, the song describes the singer's obsession with Elvis Presley and the experience of seeing his ghost when walking along Union Avenue. The lyrics reference the gates of Graceland and his tomb, which are enduring tributes to the memory of the King of Rock and Roll. The singer notes how the security detail was unaware of the apparition, while the attraction in the Jungle Room foreshadows her later encounter at the Hollywood with Gabriel.

Finally, the singer meets Reverend Green, who welcomed her with the sights and sounds of gospel music during her visit. Gabriel, a polite musician who invites her to sing along, asks if she is a Christian friend, a question to which the singer heartily replies, and how at this moment, she is the embodiment of a Christian child. The chorus repeats, showing how this visit to Memphis made a lasting impression on the singer's life.

Why is she not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame?!? Never even nominated but of all the people being nominated few have had as long a career Cher’s nor one as legendary

@carlkelso938

AMEN!

@MashedUpHorror

Maybe she muddled her rock and roll legacy with all those techno tracks over the last 20 years.

I’d buy a rock and roll album from Cher. Suits her voice way better

@davidstaudohar6733

@@MashedUpHorror it's because of Alan Freed , His ashes were being moved from the Rock and roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio because they discovered that Alan was gay 🌈, So is Cher ,

@michelledowdle7549

@@davidstaudohar6733Cher is bi then because she has a young male boyfriend. Now her daughter is another story!!

@michelledowdle7549

@@davidstaudohar6733I've never heard that Cher is gay. She's a gay icon because she stands up for them and believes in them and thinks they're isn't anything wrong with it. But I would love to know or see something about her saying she is gay. I don't believe she is!!
