Roses
Cherry Ghost Lyrics

Build a frontier 'cross the void
All tomorrow been destroyed, in a breath
I moved out to the country
And I saw the scenery shake
As a summer parade meets its death
And God's assassins rode back into town
Roses help me to pretend
Blushing brides and cosmonauts
Don't meet their bitter end
Give me grace, oh Mother
I have rumbled quite a feast
Traced the footsteps of a priest in the snow
But in my mind's picture
Of every face I've ever loved
Travel lightly suck their blood before they go
And God's assassins rode back into town
And paved their way upon the cold ground
Roses help me to pretend
Blushing brides and cosmonauts
Don't meet their bitter end
Roses, roses, cannot do this any more
The song "Roses" by Cherry Ghost is a melancholic reflection on the fragility of life and the ways we try to shield ourselves from its harsh realities. The lyrics suggest that we often use distractions and illusions to avoid facing the truth about our mortality, but ultimately we cannot escape the inevitability of death and loss. The opening lines - "Blind me with distraction, build a frontier 'cross the void" - evoke a sense of someone deliberately trying to avoid confronting their fears and anxieties, using whatever means necessary to create a barrier between themselves and the unknown.
The second verse paints a vivid picture of a rural landscape that is being torn apart by some sort of violent event - "the scenery shake[s]" and "a summer parade meets its death." This imagery suggests that even the natural world, which seems to be so peaceful and eternal, is not immune to the forces of destruction and chaos. The singer then reflects on his own relationships, noting that even the people he has loved have been subject to the same fate as the parade - "travel lightly suck their blood before they go." This line is particularly striking in its use of the metaphor of vampirism to describe the way we take from others in order to sustain ourselves, even when it means causing them harm or pain.
The chorus of the song, with its repeated refrain of "roses help me to pretend," underscores the idea that we often use symbols and rituals to shield ourselves from the harsh realities of life. The singer imagines a world where he can escape the pain of loss and death, where "blushing brides and cosmonauts don't meet their bitter end." But this is only a fantasy, a way of coping with the inevitability of loss rather than truly confronting it. The final line of the song, "roses, roses, cannot do this any more," suggests a weariness with the charade of pretending that everything is okay, a recognition that we must eventually face the truth head-on.

Blind me with distraction
Distract me from the truth with anything that can obscure it
Build a frontier 'cross the void
Create a boundary to separate oneself from the emptiness
All tomorrow been destroyed, in a breath
The future vanished in an instant
I moved out to the country
I relocated to serenity
And I saw the scenery shake
I noticed the world crumble
As a summer parade meets its death
As something beautiful ends
And God's assassins rode back into town
Evil returned
And paved their way upon the cold ground
And left destruction in their wake
Roses help me to pretend
Flowers aid me in my illusions
Blushing brides and cosmonauts
People full of hope and promise
Don't meet their bitter end
Shouldn't suffer a terrible fate
Give me grace, oh Mother
Grant me mercy, divine being
I have rumbled quite a feast
I have enjoyed a great event
Traced the footsteps of a priest in the snow
Followed the path of a moral guide in difficult times
But in my mind's picture
But in my imagination
Of every face I've ever loved
Of all the people I cherished
Travel lightly suck their blood before they go
Leave their lives behind without much caring
Roses, roses, cannot do this any more
Flowers no longer help me escape reality

@chattycathydoll interesting interpretation, roses do epitomise beauty tho so maybe beauty distracts and towards the end of most humans lives we search for some kind of beauty that once was there and existed but has faded or disappeared

I take it to mean roses distracts him from death, i.e. the bitter end, as they're linked with blushing brides, happiness and the symbol of a new life starting, and he can pretend they'll live forever
