Chesney's career took off in 1991 when he starred in the film 'Buddy's Song' alongside Roger Daltrey & Michael Elphick. He played a young boy named Buddy Clark who claws his way up the treacherous ladder of the pop world with the help of Terry, his father, played by Roger Daltrey. Terry is a dodgy dealer who wants the best for his family but finds it hard to toe the line.
During the entire nineties, out of approximately 50,000 releases, only 13 of these spent more than 5 weeks at No.1. His song 'The One and Only' was in the top Twenty for the entire decade; it spent exactly 5 weeks at No.1, this made Chesney's record the twentieth most successful release of the entire decade.

A winding path up to a door that's open wide
You think you know me but I'm changin' all the time
'Cause if I wanna be sweet
If I wanna be wild
If I wanna cry like a child
If I pick up the world in the palm of my hand
This is me
Can't ignore it
Reaching out
Breaking free
Constantly
Falling forward
Yeah, I'm just goin' for it
This is me
Sometimes life is a confusing thing
And when I talk it seems like no one's listening
Try to be an angel, but I just can't find my wings
'Cause I wanna be sweet
But I wanna be wild
If I wanna find my own style
So, I make a mistake, then I do it again
But I do it the best way that I can
This is me
Can't Ignore it
Reaching out
Breaking free
Constantly
Falling Forward
Yeah, I'm just goin' for it
This is me
More than what you see
Finding out who I can be
This is me
Can't Ignore it
Reaching out
Breaking free
Constantly
Falling Forward
Yeah, I'm just goin' for it
This is me...
...Can't Ignore it
Reaching out
Breaking free
Constantly
Falling Forward
Yeah, I'm just goin' for it
This is me...
...Can't Ignore it
Reaching out
Breaking free
Constantly
Falling Forward
Yeah, I'm just goin' for it
This is me
The lyrics to Chesney Hawkes's song This is Me describe an individual's authentic self - the side that is kept secret from the world. He sings of the fact that everyone has a private side, represented by a winding path that leads to a wide-open door, inviting the listener to explore it. Even if someone thinks they know the singer, they are changing constantly, and he can embrace different sides of himself at any given time – whether a sweet, mild individual or one prone to uncontrolled wild impulses. The song's message is that embracing oneself wholly, with all the flaws and mistakes that come with it, is what makes an individual who they are.
Hawkes uses the bridge to reiterate the point that life can be perplexing and that he fears that he is not being heard. He tries to be like an angel, but he can't seem to find his wings. The singer admits that he is continually on a journey of self-discovery, that he is capable of making mistakes and that he is best equipped to commit those mistakes in his way. He concludes that this person is reflected in the song, and that this is who he is.
