Over The Rainbow
Chet Atkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Sounds like Chet's tribute to Lenny Breau. Beautifully done. Les Paul would say so himself - they appreciated each others styles.

@royston52

An amazingly talented man, a God given talent if I ever heard one 😎

@douglasgrieve

Over the Rainbow has been my favorite song since I was a child. I was born in 1952. Thank you for putting this up, I had hurd this version a few years ago and glad I found it here. Thank You

@va3ux

This is from the 1975 album, 'Chet Atkins Goes To The Movies'. I still have 2 copies of it (vinyl). It also came with a book of all the transcriptions, done by John Knowles. It's by all time favorite Chet Atkins album.

@MrCarlHaynes

Chet was notorious for pointing out guitar players that he thought were better! Chet was #1 in my book. Those he tried to give credit, were probably influenced by The Master!

@stevesilverman5296

Chet was interviewed prior to a performance and asked if he ever got nervous before a concert. He said "not normally" but he would be that night because the great Johnny Smith was going to be in the audience. Different players entirely but what Barney Kessel said 50 years ago still holds: "No one plays better than Johnny Smith. They may play differently, but no one plays better." Loius Shelton does a terrific job with Johnny's The Boy Next Door, until you hear the original, no slight to Louis intended. There are also several sure handed attempts at his arrangement of Golden Earrings on here, which great as they are, are no match for the original. Then there's Johnny playing Seville with a pick, Tickle Toe, Love for Sale and anything from "Moods," "The Johnny Smith Foursome vol. II" and "A Perfect Match" with Art Van Damm. That ought to be a good start.

@jcmusic724

I have this arrangement and it's crazy difficult! especially the harmonics at the beginning.

@timrizzo3941

Those harp harmonics!

@P-MK

Very nice!

Emotion is subjective though, technique is not. Anyone can appreciate perfect technique, but "perfect" emotion is something different to everyone.
