So Rare
Chet Atkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is so rare as a day in June?
'Till now we have never been told
The old question's answered by one that is new
What is so rare, dear, as you?

So rare, you're like the fragrance of blossoms fair
Sweet as a breath of air
Fresh with the morning dew
So rare You're like the sparkle of old champagne
Orchids in cellophane
Couldn't compare to you
You are perfection you're my idea
Of angels singing the Ave Maria
For you're an angel, I breathe and live you
With every beat of the heart that I give you
So rare, This is a heaven on earth we share
Caring the way we care
Ours is a love so rare

So rare, You have the warmth of a Schubert air
Charming and debonaire
Those are the words for you
So rare You have a way that's beyond compare
That "one in a million" air
In everything you do
You have that something, that certain manner
You thrill me more than the "Star Spangled Banner"
You stage a love scene, so sweetly tender
And in that love scene I gladly surrender

So rare, to have a future like yours to share
Sweetheart the way we care

Overall Meaning

Chet Atkins's "So Rare" is a declaration of romantic love, with the singer describing how the object of his affection is unique, special, and rare. In two thematic verses, the singer equates his lover to the loveliest natural phenomena. The lyrics are poetic in nature and express a deep romantic appreciation for the one he loves. The opening line, "What is so rare as a day in June?" is a rhetorical question that sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer compares his love interest to some of the most beautiful and rare things in life, indicating that his love is truly one of a kind.

In the first verse, he describes his lover's scent as being as sweet and refreshing as a fragrant blossom in the morning dew. He goes on to compare her sparkle to that of old champagne and the beauty of orchids in cellophane, acknowledging that nothing can compare to her. The singer describes his lover as perfection, and she is the ideal image of an angel singing the Ave Maria. He breathes and lives her, giving her every beat of his heart. In the second verse, he compliments her warmth, charm, and debonair manner, indicating that she is one in a million. He appreciates the way she carries herself, and the certain something she has that thrills him more than the Star-Spangled Banner.

I have the Progressive Pickin' LP, but who really wants to listen to old tick and pop laden LPs? Chet should have a PhD in guitar!! He's the real doctor. Oh, that's right, he has a CGP.

I thought of Floyd Cramer, but knowing Floyd through his slip finger styling. But you might be right, because I have an early album of Floyd's and there was no slip finger playing on it at all. I really wish that they would list the personel on these albums. RCA very seldom did.

Who was the pianist on these recordings from progressive pickin'?

I am not certain but I figured it may have been Floyd Cramer.
