Everything Happens to Me
Chet Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I make a date for golf, and you can bet your life it rains.
I try to give a party, and the guy upstairs complains.
I guess I'll go through life, just catching colds and missing trains.
Everything happens to me.

I never miss a thing. I've had the measles and the mumps.
And every time I play an ace, my partner always trumps.
I guess I'm just a fool, who never looks before he jumps.
Everything happens to me.

At first, my heart thought you could break this jinx for me.
That love would turn the trick to end despair.
But now I just can't fool this head that thinks for me.
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air.

I've telegraphed and phoned and sent an air mail special too.
Your answer was goodbye and there was even postage due.
I fell in love just once, and then it had to be with you.
Everything happens to me.

I've telegraphed and phoned. I sent an air mail special too.
Your answer was goodbye and there was even postage due.

I fell in love just once, and then it had to be with you.
Everything happens to me.

Overall Meaning

The song "Everything Happens to Me" by Chet Baker is a melancholic piece that explores the recurring feeling of bad luck and missed opportunities. The first verse describes a humorous situation where the persona makes plans to play golf, but it rains on the day. Similarly, he attempts to host a party but is thwarted by a complaining neighbor. This verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, which deals with the persona's inability to catch a break in life. In the second verse, he describes his track record of missing out on good things, such as playing the right card in a game or making rash decisions before thinking. He acknowledges that he is a "fool" who seems to attract misfortune.

The bridge of the song reveals that the persona had briefly hoped that love would finally end his bad luck streak, but he has since lost faith in the power of love. He says that he has "mortgaged all [his] castles in the air", implying that he has exhausted all his dreams and hopes of a better life. The final verse details the persona's failed attempt at love - he has sent multiple messages to his lover, but they have all been met with rejection. He notes that of all the people he could have fallen in love with, it had to be the one who can't reciprocate his feelings. The final line "Everything happens to me" serves as a disheartened conclusion to the cyclical theme of bad luck.

I saw Chet in Munich in a concert hall. It was very good, and so for the first time in my life I bought a ticket for a second day with him in a small studio, about 120 people listening. It was so fantastic, he almost had no power to blow his trumpet, a lot of air with some notes.It was wonderful Some weeks later he died. What a great musician as singer and trumpet player.

@Smoothways

Just listen to the lyrics and his so fragile voice not to forget his trumpet solo. This one always brings tears to my eyes. It' s all about pains in life. He himself never left out any pain sorrow to go through. The piano has some Monk in it - I would take on any bet that the player was influenced by the Great man himself.

@shaunmcloughlin6316

Do you know who the pianist is bud?

@HoratioLindez

The pianist is Russ Freeman

@W___G

Has some Monk in it. Right.

@isaacdes962

@@W___G whats confusing?

@rhythmfield

@@isaacdes962 there’s no Monk in this man’s playing - he plays very well, but truly not Monk-like. Very few pianists lay it down quite the way Monk did.

I had almost forgotten this number until Rainy day in New York. Loved the movie. This piece sung by Timothee was just haunting all over again.

@jochenstossberg5427

YES! loved the movie too, and I had almost forgotten it too. It's a gorgeous song. Pity that Chet baker was so often seriously off the note.

@@jochenstossberg5427 THat's part of the charm of his singing.
