I'll Remember April
Chet Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This lovely day will lengthen into evening
We'll sigh goodbye to all we ever had
Alone where we have walked together
I'll remember April and be glad

I'll be content you loved me once in April
Your lips were warm and love and spring were new
I'm not afraid of autumn and her sorrow
For I'll remember April and you

The fire will dwindle into glowing ashes
For flames live such a little while

I won't forget but I won't be lonely
I'll remember April and smile

Overall Meaning

In the song "I'll Remember April" by Chet Baker, the singer acknowledges that a beautiful day will eventually come to an end and they will have to say goodbye to all the good things that ever happened along with it. Despite that, they are happy to be alone reflecting on the memories of walking together earlier. The singer concludes that they are not afraid of sorrow and the fall season because they will always carry the memory of April in their heart.

This song is a melancholic reflection on memories and nostalgia, the haunting melodies of which evoke a melancholy mood. The song is one of several jazz standards written by Gene de Paul, Don Raye, and Pat Johnston in a single week in 1941. The song has been covered by numerous artists including Bill Evans, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. Chet Baker's rendition of "I'll Remember April" features his signature muted trumpet style and his smooth, high-pitched vocals. Baker's version of the song is considered one of the definitive versions of the song.

The piano is very well played, as is the trumpet, I like this melody and shall hear it frequently.

After saturating my ears, mind, heart, and soul with the unbelievable music (and voice) of Chet Baker for five years, he has finally replaced all the other musicians as my all-time favorite in all genres ... I cannot go a single day without listening to him without experiencing withdrawals…

It’s still so sad that he took the road of lethal drugs .. but at times he got off them and straightened out .. albeit by spending time in Jail, but he will never EVER be forgotten!

Rest in peace my wonderful friend …
