Nick Murphy settled on the stage name Chet Faker as an homage to Chet Baker. Other influences he has cited include Bob Dylan, as well as his mother's Motown albums and his father's "chilled out Ibiza CDs".
He first rose to prominence after his cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity" went viral online, reaching #1 on the Hypemachine chart in May 2011. He released his first EP Thinking In Textures in 2012 to positive reviews, being described as "wonderfully loungey" and praised for its ability to "mix subtlety with impressive beauty". The EP was also popular with fans, with single "I'm Into You" landing at number 24 on the 2012 Triple J Hottest 100 chart.
Faker has worked with several other artists since the release of his debut EP, including collaborations with Flume and remixes of songs by MS MR and The Temper Trap. He was a featured vocalist on Say Lou Lou's "Fool of Me", which was named Best New Track by Pitchfork in May 2013.
He released a new single featuring Kilo Kish on 12 August 2013. In September of 2013, Flume announced that he and Faker had recorded an EP, stating that the final result "doesn't sound particularly like Flume or specifically like, you know, a Chet Faker record it really is kinda like a hybrid of both sounds going to one" and he feels like everything they did with the EP "was collaborative about the whole effort, and I think that shines through." Faker's debut album, "Built on Glass", was released on 11 April 2014, which was preceded by the release of lead single "Talk Is Cheap" and its accompanying music video on February 11. The album debuted at number 1 on the ARIA Charts.

Chet Faker's song "Gold" is an emotional ballad that speaks of love and the search for companionship. A kid recommended this song at a Halloween party last night and no one seemed to care or like it. This song was so good I couldn't stop bopping my head to it. I said out loud that this was one of the best songs I've heard in a while and the kid that recommended it couldn't stop smiling. I don't know. Just felt like telling a little story.
Update (Feb, 9 2023): Since the new semester at my school started, I have a class with the kid in the story. We're good friends and I had a great night with him. We went to an antique shop, got a funny chain, went to a ramen place, went to his house, etc. Learned a lot about him. He has a dope history and is a pro at the yoyo, lol. He's a dope kid.
Update #2 (April 10, 2023): We hang out a lot and we're great friends. Being around him is fun and I always have a good time. Last night we visited some abandoned places and I even got a picture of him sitting on top of a train, lol. I go over to his place a lot and I met his mom and her boyfriend. I even drew something for his mom. I like to draw a lot, lol.
Update #3 (April 27, 2023): We consider each other close friends and he's always down to hang out if he's not busy. Great guy. Great music taste as well, lol. He put me on to some other songs that are in my playlist.
Update #4 (June 8, 2023): We are good friends and hanging out every week. Sometimes multiple times a week. He recently took me to a lake to swim by the name of Hidden Beach. Or at least it used to be called that. It was super fun and he's down to take me again sometime. He's actually coming to pick me up so we can hang out right now, lol. He also got me into System Of A Down. They're pretty cool, lol.
Update #5 (July 8, 2023): He goes to Alaska every summer and it's currently Summer here in Minnesota. I'm not able to hang out with him but I can't wait for him to get back. A little update on me tho. I just got a job and get paid well which means me and him could do a lot of more things. Now I just need to start learning how to drive, lol. I'll update more when he gets back.
Update #6 (September 20, 2023): He got back from Alaska and two days after him getting back, I went to the Renaissance Festival with him, his mom and her boyfriend. They're all amazing people. I wasn't gonna dress up but his mom made me a wizard robe because she finds scraps and a bunch of other stuff and makes clothes out of it. She did an amazing job. I was there as a dark wizard, my good buddy was an executioner, his mom was a peasent herbalist, and her boyfriend was a peasent. They all looked super cool and did a great job. They missed my birthday and bought me a $190 fountain pen because I love writing and I write in cursive. Thay really did not have to do that and I told them that but they almost insisted on getting me something. I've never felt so loved by another family. Everything I receive from them I treasure and will always keep. They're wonderful people. The Renaissance Festival was really fun and I wore big rings as apart of my costume and some girl said they were cute so that was pretty nice, lol. We even got pizza afterwards. 😭
Update #7 (October 3, 2023): Last Friday, we hung out after school and we ended up going to some hippie party. Because my friend and his fam are hippies lol. I'm getring closer with his mom's bf and I'm starting to feel like a part of the family now. He even said that I'm always welcome. Makes me feel loved. So we were at this hippie party and there was this cool drum circle and some people were dancing and this dude had these light up balls on a string and he twirled them around and it looked super cool. After that, we were driving back to his house so he could drop me off at mine because he didn't bring his car and we got a flat tire 😭 It was raining kinda hard but we all didn't heaitate to get out and fix up the tire lol. Took like 30 mins. We all kinda bonded over that lol. Overall it was an adventurous night and it was pretty cool. More updates to come hopefully lol.
Update #8 (October 29, 2023): I had weight loss surgery and am in recovery right now. All's goong good. But before that, I had to fast a little and him and his mom were doing it with me. They really didn't need to but they did. I've never felt so loved by a family. He visits me from time to time which is really nice. I can't eat anything for another week and he's been there fir me as well as some other friends. More updates to come.
Update #9 (Dec 20, 2023): Ah man. Things are still super good. Recently me, him, his mom and her boyfriend started our own little band and we've had like two jam sessions so far. It was really fun and I found out I'm good at making up like punk and metal bass lines on the spot. These jam sessions are truly bringing out all of the talent we have within ourselves. I've never been so glad to have a friend in my life.
Update #10 (January 28, 2024): Me and him have come so far together. Recently, we've gotten on facetime and he's helping me get into the habit of working out and is helping me better myself. I'm thinking of maybe making a little vlog on YouTube to document our days when we hang out and what it's like. I'll have to get his permission to do that though, lol. Stay tuned for more updates!
Update #11 (Mar 22, 2024): Eze has gotten me into the habit of doing small workouts and I can feel myself getting stronger. I love that guy and he's such a great friend. He's helped me through so much. Just the other day we hung out and went to thrift stores looking for jackets to put patches on and stuff because his amazing mother said she'd make me a custom jacket with patches and all that cuz I love that stuff and always wanted something like it. Also, we both love a song called "My Favorite Monster" by Rotem Sivan. We are the only two likes on it and it's very underrated. Check it out if y'all can.
