Nick Murphy settled on the stage name Chet Faker as an homage to Chet Baker. Other influences he has cited include Bob Dylan, as well as his mother's Motown albums and his father's "chilled out Ibiza CDs".
He first rose to prominence after his cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity" went viral online, reaching #1 on the Hypemachine chart in May 2011. He released his first EP Thinking In Textures in 2012 to positive reviews, being described as "wonderfully loungey" and praised for its ability to "mix subtlety with impressive beauty". The EP was also popular with fans, with single "I'm Into You" landing at number 24 on the 2012 Triple J Hottest 100 chart.
Faker has worked with several other artists since the release of his debut EP, including collaborations with Flume and remixes of songs by MS MR and The Temper Trap. He was a featured vocalist on Say Lou Lou's "Fool of Me", which was named Best New Track by Pitchfork in May 2013.
He released a new single featuring Kilo Kish on 12 August 2013. In September of 2013, Flume announced that he and Faker had recorded an EP, stating that the final result "doesn't sound particularly like Flume or specifically like, you know, a Chet Faker record it really is kinda like a hybrid of both sounds going to one" and he feels like everything they did with the EP "was collaborative about the whole effort, and I think that shines through." Faker's debut album, "Built on Glass", was released on 11 April 2014, which was preceded by the release of lead single "Talk Is Cheap" and its accompanying music video on February 11. The album debuted at number 1 on the ARIA Charts.

Most don't know what it does
Just accept it as the sky is blue
But for some people
They got a window half open in their souls
When the breeze blows, it blows
Now, one particular person climbed right through that window
Went so far looking, he forgot what it was he was missing in the first place
After a while, he realized he might well be starving to death reading a cookbook
And there ain't no amount of thinking can fix thinking
So he climbed back through
Into the here and into the now
He checked in, heart and soul
To a place they call
Hotel surrender
Get out the way, I'm comin' through, uh
Well, pardon me, I feel for you
'Cause what I say, that's what I do, mm
So get out the way I got the truth
Hey, you tell them lies one at a time, uh, three, four
I don't wanna be just another life, yeah, yeah, come on
I'll be the fool for all of you
Bet you wanna see how I'm gonna do
Another day, another lie
If you go to sleep, that's the way to die, ooh
Take it ease with a happy eye, mm
End my days with a healthy sigh, huh, sing it
Oh me, oh my, uh
I'll sleep when I die, yeah
Oh me, oh my
I'll sleep when I die
Uh, it's not what I say, it's what I do
So just let it be 'cause it's comin' through
Don't you realize it's your one life, uh
So if you've got to be weird, you better do it right, weird, alright, huh
But because I'm here I'm gonna see it through, uh
If you wanna be a million dollar fool, babe
Now there comes a day when you wanna die, uh
But as for me I'm gonna take my time, uh
Take it ease with a happy eye, mm, yeah
And end my day with a healthy sigh, ah
Oh me, oh my
I'll sleep when I die, yeah
Oh me, oh my, uh
I'll sleep when I die
(Oh me, oh my)
(I'll sleep when I die)
(Oh me, oh my)
(I'll sleep when I die)
(Oh me, oh my)
(I'll sleep when I die)
The lyrics of Chet Faker's "To Me" talk about the transformative power of music and its ability to open up windows to our souls. The singer is reflecting on one particular person who climbed through that window and got lost in the world of music, forgetting what it was he was missing in the first place. While music has the power to transport us to another place or time, the singer cautions that it's important to not lose oneself completely in that world, and it's important to check back in to the present moment every once in a while.
The second part of the song seems to take on a different perspective, with the singer addressing someone else and urging them to be true to themselves and not be just another life. He encourages them to take their time and not rush through life, taking it "ease with a happy eye" and ending each day with a "healthy sigh." The repeated refrain "Oh me, oh my, I'll sleep when I die" suggests a sense of urgency to live life to the fullest.
Overall, the song is about finding balance between immersing oneself in the world of music and still being present in reality, and the importance of being true to oneself and living life to the fullest.

You keep on lying, you keep on lying, to me
You’re keepin’ me tight, You’re keepin’ me tight, I see
You keep on tryin’, enough to rely, on me
You keep on lyin’, enough to deny you, can see
When you curl up in bed and, just you in your head now, are you livin’?
When you look straight ahead and, you wish you were dead now, are you givin’?
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’
I know
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’
I know
You keep on lyin’, you keep on lyin’, to me
You’re keepin’ me tired, You’re keepin’ me tired, I see
You keep on tryin’, enough to rely, on me
You keep on lyin’, enough to deny you, can see
When you curl up in bed and, just you in your head now, are you livin’?
When you look straight ahead and, you wish you were dead now, are you givin’?
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’ (You keep goin’)
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’ (You keep goin’)
I know
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’ (You keep goin’)
You’re givin’ it all for nothin’ (You keep goin’)
I know

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
You keep on lying, you keep on lying to me
You’re keeping me tired, you’re keeping me tired, I see
You keep on trying, enough to rely on me
You keep on lying, enough to deny you can see
[Pre-Chorus]
When you curl up in bed and
It's you in your head now
Are you living?
When you look straight ahead and
You wish you were dead now
Are you giving?
[Chorus]
You’re giving it all for nothing
You’re giving it all for nothing
I know
You’re giving it all for nothing
You’re giving it all for nothing
I know
[Verse 2]
You keep on lying, you keep on lying to me
You’re keeping me tired, you’re keeping me tired, I see
You keep on trying, enough to rely on me
You keep on lying, enough to deny, you can see
[Pre-Chorus]
Now listen
When you curl up in bed
And it's you in your head now
Are you living?
When you look straight ahead and
You wish you were dead now
Are you giving?
[Chorus]
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
I know (In trouble)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
I know (In trouble)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
I know (In trouble)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
I know (In trouble)
Now you’re giving
Now you’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
You’re giving it all for nothing (You keep crawling)
You’re giving it all for nothing, I know (In trouble)
You’re giving it all for nothing
You’re giving it all for nothing, I know
You’re giving it all for nothing
You’re giving it all for nothing, I know

Saw this at your melbourne gig last night, and legit cried, which is not a reaction I've ever had to live music before. This song's gotten me through some hard times and it was so great hearing it live xx
@36isnotold
This song begs the question: are you really living or merely existing?
We give so much of ourselves for other people’s happiness—wants—their needs, leaving what’s leftover for ourselves. Why do we do that?
