House
Chiaki Ishikawa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "House" by Chiaki Ishikawa is a nostalgic piece about childhood memories and the bittersweet feelings that come with growing up. The lyrics describe a small garden in the corner of a house, where the singer and her siblings used to play and eat wild strawberries after school. However, as summer ends, the garden becomes neglected and overgrown with only the yellow flowers of the rapeseed swaying in the wind. Despite the unkempt state of the once-beautiful garden, the bond between the singer and her siblings remains unbroken, and they continue to hold hands and support each other through the hardships of life.

The second verse paints a picture of two children riding a rusty bicycle on a narrow, gravelly road, singing a nonsensical song and laughing until they fall. The singer remembers the day she first asked for a hamster from her parents, who were watching her through a glass window. She convinced them that getting a hamster would not reduce the size of the family and that it would also make her happy. This memory brings a smile to the singer's face and reminds her that, despite the challenges of growing up and facing the unknown, hope and happiness are still attainable.

The chorus repeats the poetic phrase "手をつないだ小さな兄妹たち" (te wo tsunaida chiisana kyoudai-tachi) meaning "the little siblings who held hands," emphasizing the importance of familial bonds and the continuity of these connections even when everything and everyone else may change.
