Hideaway
Chicago Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know I gotta go
Got to find a place
Get away
From the human race

Find a place where the air is clear
On a sunny day, sunny day
I got to find
A Hideaway, hideaway

Hideaway
Hideaway
Hideaway
Hideaway

You know I gotta leave
Got to find a place, any place
Get away
From the city pace, city pace

I gotta go out where the air is fresh and clear
On a sunny day, sunny day

And I got to find
A hideway, yeah yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Chicago's song "Hideaway" depict the desire to escape from the pressures of modern living and find a secluded spot where one can be at peace. The singer expresses a need to leave the city, referring to the "human race" and the "city pace" as things that need to be left behind. In search of a place where the air is clear on a sunny day, the singer seeks a "Hideaway" that will provide the respite they crave. The repetition of the word "Hideaway" emphasizes the urgency of this need for escape, while the repetition of the phrase "sunny day" highlights the idea of finding tranquility and joy in nature.

The longing for a "Hideaway" speaks to a universal human experience of needing to take a break from the chaos of daily life. The lyrics suggest a longing for a simpler and more natural existence, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The song can be seen as a call to connect with nature, to take a deep breath of fresh air, and to find a quiet space where one can meditate, reflect, and recharge.

Great song! Thank you Pete Pardo for mentioning this song and always pointing people to early Chicago for some great music. I grew up in the 80s, so I would never give Chicago a chance, based on what the radio and my little sister would play by them.

He sent me here, too. Taking a break from the latest video, which is great so far!

This song has three perfect things, Cetera, Kath and Seraphine! That incredible rhythm section which is pure perfection, all of them underrated too. Kath gets to let loose here and Danny really shines. Love this Peter gem.

This is probably the most honest, gut-felt, emotional and sincere song Peter Cetera ever wrote or performed. “Hideaway” gives us the first public rumblings of why he’d eventually leave Chicago. He grew to hate all the touring, and he’s said in interviews that he was “a rocker at heart” and that he wanted to do more songs without horns. No horns here. Just pure, unadulterated letting off steam. At the time the song came out he’d grown to become an avid skier. He’d eventually settle down in Idaho’s Sun Valley, a wealthy skier’s Mecca, where he still lives in his very own hideaway, where the high-elevation air is thin, but certainly clear, fresh and clean.
