Holdin' On
Chicago Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walkin' through time
Reachin' for yesterday
'Cause we're frightened of tomorrow
Trying to find
The feeling that's gone astray, far away
I remember the look in your eyes
Love we made unafraid
Now we've opened the window
So let's not close the shade

(Chorus)
Holdin' on
'Cause the memory of you
Is something I just can't erase
Holdin' on
I don't know what to do
'Cause the pieces won't fit into place
But no matter what happens
We can't let it end this way
So far away
So close to something new
But we're holdin' off tomorrow
Maybe someday
We'll find what we need to do, until then
We'll be doing the best that we can
Out of rhyme, out of time
While we're hiding our feelings
We're leaving love behind

(Chorus)
Far away
Reachin' for yesterday
So far away
Something has gone away
So afraid
To find what we had

(Chorus)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Chicago's song Holdin' On seem to be about a relationship that has gone sour, and the two lovers desperately trying to hold on to the memories of what used to be. The first verse sets the mood of the song with the melancholic words, "Walkin' through time/ Reachin' for yesterday/ 'Cause we're frightened of tomorrow/ Trying to find/ The feeling that's gone astray, far away." Here, the singer expresses a sense of loss, of trying to hold on to the past because they are scared of the future. They feel adrift, searching for something that has slipped through their fingers, far out of reach.

The second verse is more specific to the relationship between the two lovers. "Love we made unafraid/ Now we've opened the window/ So let's not close the shade" suggests that the relationship was once strong and fearless, but now something has come between them. They have opened up to each other or to the world, but perhaps this has led to more problems. The chorus repeats twice, and its desperate lyrics express the same sense of loss and confusion as before, "Holdin' on/ 'Cause the memory of you/ Is something I just can't erase/ Holdin' on/ I don't know what to do/ 'Cause the pieces won't fit into place/ But no matter what happens/ We can't let it end this way." The final lines of the song, "So afraid/ To find what we had" leave the listener with a sense of hesitation and uncertainty about the future of the relationship.

on Oh, Thank You Great Spirit

Great song and a fitting tribute to Jimi from his friend and fan Terry Kath, I've all ways believed the song was kind of a prospective of the dead, coming to the realization that they have crossed over and or no longer burden by all of life's problem's and pain's and are now free from all, and now overcome with gratitude to the Great Spirit , Greater of the universe and of life , GOD, that he is now free to fly the heavenly sky's , but ether way death or just a good night's sleep, great song.
