Listen
Chicago Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen,
If you think that we're here for the money
You couldn't be right, you know(owowow)
But the bread is not too good here
It could be so natural
I said all you got to do is listen

Listen,
If you don't hear what you can tell us
If it's good you can tell us all
Or you can smile, that's alright my friend
It could be so nice, you know
If only you would listen

Listen,
If you don't understand it, no no no no
You got to try to fly
And don't you put me down, please

For creating beyond your mind
I said all you got to do is listen

Overall Meaning

The song “Listen” by Chicago delivers an important message about the essence of communication, listening to one another and understanding each other. The song starts subtly, with the lyrics “If you think that we're here for the money, you couldn't be right, you know(owowow)”. This line suggests that the motive behind their music isn’t for material gain. The following line, “But the bread is not too good here” seems to indicate that they aren’t making much money at all, and in fact, they are struggling financially. The band is revealing that while they may not be making much financially, they are still giving it their all because they believe in their music.

The chorus, which repeats the word “Listen” several times, stresses the importance of listening to others. The lyrics, “If you don’t hear what you can tell us, if it's good you can tell us all, or you can smile, that's alright my friend, it could be so nice, you know if only you would listen”, suggest that Chicago wants people to really hear what they are saying and understand their message, and that they believe that if people truly listen, they will be able to connect with their music on a deeper level.

The last verse encourages listeners to continue to try to understand the band's music even if they don’t understand it yet. “If you don't understand it, no no no no. You got to try to fly, And don't you put me down, please for creating beyond your mind. I said all you got to do is listen.” The message here is that people should try to expand their thinking, learn new things, and be open to new ideas. The song ultimately delivers a message about the importance of listening and understanding, and the importance of being open to new ideas and ways of thinking.

on Oh, Thank You Great Spirit

Great song and a fitting tribute to Jimi from his friend and fan Terry Kath, I've all ways believed the song was kind of a prospective of the dead, coming to the realization that they have crossed over and or no longer burden by all of life's problem's and pain's and are now free from all, and now overcome with gratitude to the Great Spirit , Greater of the universe and of life , GOD, that he is now free to fly the heavenly sky's , but ether way death or just a good night's sleep, great song.
